I have a small leak from the distributor caps on my '85 QV, so I'm changing up the o-ring, seal and gaskets. I notice that the distributor plate and cap seem to be fixed, without a way to adjust them (which is great since everything will go back together as it was). However, it has me wondering how someone would go about setting the ignition timing. I checked the shop manual but can't really find an explanation. Just curious...

Timing is fixed, controlled by the Digiplex.

Thanks. '85 is the "newest" car in my collection. Always more to learn...

85 QV is a great car. I've owned my GTB since new.

If your car is a US model, you can change the Digiplex boxes to the Euro Digiplex which give you a more advance ignition timing.

Does any one know where you can send you Digiplex boxes to have them tested?

I have used Ferrari Service of Bedford NH. They rebuilt my digiplex units. The results were very satisfactory, they even programmed in a soft rev limiter which works very well. They can custom program if you want.

As an extra bit of info the timing is not fixed, it varies in accordance with engine speed and manifold pressure however the variance is controlled electronically and the distributor and rotor are in fixed positions. This is why the contact wiper on the end of the rotor is so large so that it will be aligned with the cap pole throughout the entire range from idle to maximum advance.
