Hello, I have a 308 QV with one belt for waterpump and alternator. With the original Gates belts it runs perhaps 2 miles and then the belt ist melting. Water pump and alternator are moving freely. What could be the problem? Is there an alternative for this belt? I am thinking using a thicker belt even if it does not fit perfectly in the groves. Any help is appreciated, Greetings from Germany, Günter
I guess I will take a stab at troubleshooting. Since the water pump and alternator appear to spin freely when the engine is turned off. One method to troubleshoot the problem is to unplug the field wire on the alternator (the small wire on the alternator). This will keep the alternator from charging and becoming difficult to turn if its due to electrical loading or an alternator issue. Make sure your battery is fully charged for the test run. Otherwise, I suspect the water pump. Later QV's have separate belts for alternator and water pump. Conversion is possible.
The pulleys may be turning freely, try pushing the pulley in both directions and turn at the same time- are they still free. A shaft can move axially and then go tight..
The belt is an original belt from a Ferrari shop here in Germany. Someone on a German Ferrari website suggested that it was too tight. Thank you for all your suggestions . Gesendet von iPad mit Tapatalk
Doesn't mean they gave you the right belt ...everyone makes mistakes. I'd double check the part number If all the above checks out, maybe its a belt alignment issue, between the three pulleys?
Seen it many times a. Water pumps do sometimes just momentarily freeze up then turn OK again from bad bearings but B is far more common. B. It was an unconscionably bad belt drive design. The belt needs to be insanely tight. Far tighter than most in their right mind would normally do.
I am going to guess the opposite, you really have to be brave an d block some tension into this dual service belt. Of coures what many are saying is true either device having bearing problems will kill it. BUT when I here mine even chirp upon cold start up, I use a wodden wedge to really get between the alternator and the egine block and make it tight. They are nout rubber, but plastic and truthfully Gates meant it to be on an AC fan in your attic. The Gates Polyflex is a drive belt, but not in the Automitive line at all. It ia also a narrow V groove so does not cross over easliyl. Later pulleys divided the engine driven task but then you have three belts. I use the old system tightened as described. There;s a Belt Tension Guage tool, but I ve never seen one.
This ...you really do think "I'm gonna ruin the alternator", but they can take it, besides easily rebuilt, here in Houston (for now)...
