After doing a search of the threads here, I wasn't able to find a quick answer (though I recall seeing a related thread recently). I checked the oil in my QV tonight (as instructed by the manual, about 10 minutes (manual says 15 for the "best" measurements) after shutting the car off, so with warm engine. Dip stick showed below the "MIN" line. I need to top off the car tomorrow morning for a run, and no time to do an oil change this weekend. I have no idea whether the previous owner put synthetic oil or not in the car. Can anyone advise as to whether, at least until I can take it for a full oil change in a week or two, I can simply top off with the oil recommended in the owner's manual (SAE 10W50)?? If so, 3 quarts maybe?

Any quick help (even pointing me to the correct thread if the answer is there) would be appreciated so I can do my saturday morning run.

    Thanks!

I say wait till morning to check dip stick so you can get the most accurate reading knowing that all of the OIL haved settled bellow the pan where the end of the dip stick is.

No. Engine must be checked hot.

Put whatever is about right ino the car to top it off for your run, but I would suggest changing your oil ASAP so you know what is in it.

The only reason you check the oil hot is because as the oil get hotter it becomes thinner like watter therefore its faster for the oil to drain back down to the pan but this is not accurate.

Last time I checked oil HOT it shows Im 1/4 of a quart low, after 2 hours I checked it again and it say Full up to the top line. So either you wait I say 10min. or longer after shutting the engine off or next morning before you start the engine. you don't wan't to add anymore oil than you should.

On my 328, there is almost a one quart difference between checking 15 minutes after shutdown as per the owners manual and checking it cold the next day. The difference is due to the oil trapped in the inverted oil filter that gradually settles back into the pan over a couple of days.

I always assumed the factory took this into account and that is why they specified checking after 15 minutes rather than checking it after sitting for a while.

Mike you're right but in most cases most cars don't have inverted filter
