I am continuing my search for the procedure to remove the plenum components for re-painting them in the wrinkle red. If anybody knows of a link please advise. Also, what is the best paint for this (VHT?).

    Thanks.

I did this process a few months ago. I ordered the VHT on the net and followed the instructions on the can. Very important to strip off all of the old finish first. I sprayed three fairly heavy coats in different directions and then baked the parts in the oven at 200 degrees for an hour. I was quite pleased with the results. I really didn't even mind the smell, had it aired out before my wife got home. If you have specific questions just let me know.

Would it not be better and more durable to have it powdercoated crinkle red?

I am part owner of a powdercoating business in town and I have plans of having my plenum redone in red wrinkle, which we have in stock. I attached a pic of the color. I had planned to do it during the next valve adjustment with the valve covers done in aluminum silver.

As the others have said, yes it can be done and there are several different variations of wrinkle red (also black, blue, green, chrome and several others) so getting a good match is possible.

thanks to all for the info. I found a powdercoater near by in the San Fernando Valley that can do it. Off a picture I emailed them, they estimated $250-$350 including detailing out the bare metal lines and Logo, if I bring in the two parts.

    How does that sound?

When painting or powder painting the plenum, what do you with the throttle body
to make sure the color will match? Disassemble the throttle body and paint it also?
Is it very difficult to disassemble the throttle body?

Not being overly familiar with that engine I can't really say. Is this your engine?

    Bob,

Be sure to see samples of the powdercoating before you commit to having the plenum done. Most powdercoating has a high gloss finish, not what you want if you want it to look original. It's a PITA to get if off it it looks wrong, too.

I've used embee for a set of motorcycle wheels; awesome finish, great service, and cheap ($75 a wheel). Getting the right color and gloss may be a problem.

That sounds pretty outrageously high to me.

I think once you described the part, they tacked on a 200% Ferrari tax.
