    Hi again,

With the master/booster off for rebuild I started in on the rear of the car. I have pulled the diaper and am doing major rust repair to the two top mounting brackets. The car has two rubber valence pieces to cover the air space between the US spec bumper and the body. These are pop riveted to the fiberglass shell. Unfortunately the heads on almost all of the pop rivets are off and the valences are about to part from the car. I decided to fix this and started with the passenger side which was being held on by a single sheet metal screw that someone had screwed into the aluminum barrel of one of the broken pop rivets.

My quandry is how to remove and replace the existing pop rivets. I can't see the back of them and the fibreglass is fairly thin. I worry about a slip which will result in a much bigger job. I have attached a pic of what I am up against.

Has anyone done this job or have a suggestion on how to proceed?

Thanks for any help you can give.

    Paul

I had mine off when I painted my car. Carefully drill out the existing rivets and re-install. Pretty straight forward.

I'd grind the rivet heads (VERY) thin, being carefull of heat build-up, with a Dremel, then punch out the shanks with a drift pin.

Thanks guys, you gave me the mental fortitude to keep going. With a dremel and a drill I was able to remove all the pop rivets, including the two down by the quarter panel. Turns out that there is a tiny space between that area and the quarter which allows the end of the rivet to pop out. Not knowing that is what we giving me pause.

At any rate, that repair is behind me. Next the cooling system refurb.

    Ciao,
    Paul
