Last Saturday my 308 GTS QV (EU-model) from 1985 refused to start. I took it from the garage (it started immediately) and switched off the engine. After 20 minutes I wanted to restart, but it didn't.

I can hear the fuelpump, but the engine does not start. If I try again, I cannot hear the fuelpump any more. My battery is weak and needs replacing. After 20min I try again, hear the fule pump, but nothing happens. All the rest is working, and the sparks do work. It seems that the Bosch system has a safety stop or so. May be when there is not enough energy, the system shuts itself down to protect the engine or so. After charging the battery, the fulepump works again and I can hear that the engine want to start, but then it does not. It is totally dead. My car always started at once since 1996!! Jump starting with another car did not help.

Who knows what the problem could be?

You said the battery needs replacing anyway so replace the battery and try again. It is possible there is not enough cranking power if the battery is tired and can't hold a full charge...same thing happened to my 944 recently.
