I managed to break off one of the ears that hold the rear left brake caliper on my 308. After the initial shock and visions of endless internet searches for replacement at huge cost, I notived that there are undrilled ears on the other side of the upright, you can notice it on the picture I stole from another thread here. My question is, are the left and right rear upright the same on a 308? Looks like it, and it would be more economical for Ferrari as they have to cast only 1 type. So, to repair the stupid mistake I made, can I just switch the left and right upright, and have the unused ears drilled and tapped? The ears are tapped M12x1.25 (metric) and then there is a helicoil M10x1.25 in it. The maintanance people at my job can do it, however they only have the tools and helicoils for a M10x1.5 bolt. Would that matter much? At my job they do the work for free, otherwise I have to find a shop that has the M12x1.25 tapping tool, the helicoils itself are not that expensive. Would there be a problem with the wheelbearings if they suddenly after maybe 24 years, are spinning the other direction, as I plan to leave them in the uprights when swapping?
Thank in advance for any information! (please tell me what I'm planning is no problem at all!)

    Bert,

As far as the spare parts manual shows they have different part numbers for left and right, however the part numbers are superceeded which cross over to a common part number, so the answer to your question is yes they can be swapped over. I would still double check by compairing the two hubs side by side and measuring certain points on both hubs.

Although in theory you could leave the bearings, after 24 years I would replace them, if you decide to take a chance certainly replace the hub oil
    seals.

The castings are the same, but the machining is different. The ears that hold the brakes are one set on the right and the other set on the left. You could easily convert one by machining the other holes and it sound like ferrari now just machines both sets now so they oly need to stiock 1 part.

That is what I thought, good.

About the wheelbearings, I don't know if they are still the original ones, but it is my understanding, if they're not broken, they are good! I make a habit, now that the car is not running for almost 2 years, to move the car at least once every week a bit, so the bearings won't get a chance to settle on 1 spot, this causes the failures in my experience. I will replace them however soon as it seems they are gone.

I have a pair of good used hubs if your repair efforts fail. I managed to break off one of the ears on a hub years ago on a 308 race car. On this car it was because the caliper was bent and twisted from a shunt. I ended up finding 3 used hub assys and used only one.

They are the same--I swapped mine from side to side a while back to move the brakes to the front and mount seperate calipers for parking in the back-----

MAJOR WARNING ****** if you plan on swapping sides--REPLACE ALL 4 BEARINGS--they are "used to traveling mostly in 1 direction and will die very quickly if you change the direction---this comes from experience--mine only lasted 4000 miles after teh swap......

That is what I was afraid of... And from experience with other cars, swapping wheelbearings also never works, the force needed to get them out kills their life expectancy.
For a second I considered also moving my brakes to the front, but no, too complicated. Let's get those new wheelbearings then.
    Thanks everybody for all replies.
