anyone replaced the rubber trim that goes around the rear roof line on a gts ? If I have it figured out right it looks like one piece that goes from door jamb up the side across the roof and back down to the other door jamb ? Is it hard to replace ? mine has two worn spots. John
You've got the right picture -- not hard (IIRC, I had to drill out and replace a few 1/8"~3mm rivets, but you never no if such things were added later and vary car-to-car). Definitely, make the repair -- you'll enjoy it every time you don't see the worn spots
Perry, I replaced my on my 78 and it pulled off and when right back on. What year is your car? I would recommend doing the entire cabin trim from the windshield to back around the rear window.
It should pull off without rivets. Call GT cars parts. They had the best prices on the rubber. Make sure you get all the pieces that go around the inside of the car. It's a cut to lenght item so center the windshield piece and run that. Then cut. Pull off the back piece and then cut to meet the front. You will need tin snips. Your doors will not close. You will need to shut them with some effort until the rubber gets a memory. Your top will seal up nice.
You're taxing my memory so put a 50% factor on this, and your 308 may be different: Although the gasket is designed (like the trunk gasket) to slip over a protuding thin flange, the riveting was placed in a few locations so that the gasket wouldn't scoot along the flange. Just lift up the outer "flap" portion of the gasket and look underneath for the rivet heads (they aren't visible when the outer flap of the gasket is in its normal position). If none, yours is "unmodified" like the others.
Steve, You have forgotten more about 308's then I know so I suspect you might be right on the rivets. I did this on the 78 that did not have the windshield drain. I looked at my 83 a few weeks ago when I was washing it and I did not recall seeing the rivets. I will take a deeper look tonight and see if it is riveted, unless........Ferrari changed it for the 84-85 year.
Here is the diagram from FoUK that shows the trims. This diagram covers years 80-85. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I think you're right that "stock" there are no rivets (at least there are no rivets shown in my ex-78s SPC), but I think this kind of fix/modification is not rare so I just wanted to point out the possiblity. IMO, this is a no-brainer to decide to fix: 1. You'll get dinged on it anyway at PPI resale, and 2. Such a visible location -- why subject yourself to a negative impression so often. It's like having bad wheel caps. Yes, they're over-priced, but you pay more in lost enjoyment by not replacing -- JMO.
Steve, There was a Factory SB that added a rain gutter to all 308's that did not have them, IE the 78-early 80's. This SB called for a rivets drain rail to be installed along the windshield, A replacement targa top, and new, shorter rubber seals. Since his car is an 85, this would not apply. I agree, no brainer to get it fixed.
it doesn't look like there's a part number listed on the piece I need, I called T-ruts and it's 101.00 there. GT parts it's 139.00
I'm looking to replace mine as well. Is the look and feel like the original? Mine has a few blemishes, but I'm not willing to risk the original look vs. a close replica? The price seems pretty cheap which make me think it's not. For the price mabe just order it and see.
