I have an 81 308 gts and was driving down the road when my air pump froze and the belt melted and the air pump is history. Ever since then the car is rough at low rpms and as soon as you give it some gas it purrs like a kitten. Any Idea what might cause this. Before this happened I had no problems.

the air pump suppplied air into the exhaust stream to burn off any unburned fuel. if your 81 has a frequncy valve it miht be trying to compensate for the slightly rich condition. however on the other hand it might just be the difference in sound.

no lambda on the '81. If the belt broke, check around and see if it knocked a vacuum line off an electrovalve.

the ugly scenario is the cam jumped a tooth on the timing belt. I don't remember if there's a way to check that on that car without taking off the cam cover.

the air pump itself, along with the checkvalves in the hoses, are cheap GM parts.
