308 Security

Hello all,

We are nearing delivery of our 308 GTB in the UK. What is everyones suggestions & recommendations regarding an alarm and tracker?

Depends on how much you want to spend- Gemini make good alarm/ immobilizers- the immob part will interrupt the ignition and starter supply lines, so it cannot be driven away. Thacham approved for insurance co. Tracker can be Vodaphone ADR5 as used in modern ferrari but expensive fitting and £304 a year cost, lots cheaper types available.

 

FWIW I use a gear shift plate lock and kill switch that cuts power to fuel pump and ignition. Never lock my doors as the damage would be worse by a break in. Although a tracker sounds worth looking into.

 

As noted above more often than not the battery is best left disconnected to save continuous charge etc which compromises a tracker etc and/or an alarm both of which have the capability to flatten the battery so by extension seek out something like a Krooklok - there are a lot of cars in the UK which are more desirable than a lhd 40 yr old sports car

 

+1. I use the Hill Engineering shifter lock. Its enough the dissuade the joyriders.

The tracker could be a good idea. A professional thief is going to flatbed the vehicle although the aftermarket for 308 parts is pretty small.

 

It's got three pedals. Most joyriders probably can't get it out of the garage.

 

I installed a gps tracker from Amcrest in my 308. A small unit with 2 weeks of battery life, if auto battery is disconnected. I installed a 12v to 5v adapter to keep the internal battery fully charged. All hidden. It works great with 1 minute update on location when my 308 moves. I get text and email with location. I also can track my 308 via Amcrest app which provides a satellite google map. It uses gps and cell towers for its location. You may have similar setup in UK.

 

I do not disconnect my car battery. I installed cable from battery to my CTEK model 1090.

Another vote here for the Hill Engineering gear gate lock - One of the first things I bought for my recently acquired 328 GTS.

It's a chunky piece of metal that will prevent all but the most determined of thieves from taking the car (and only £63 from a well known UK supplier), and such a simple, clever idea.

Tracker: I believe the UK Police only use the original Tracker system in their cars, but they can contact other tracker companies if required, and be guided by each companies own operatives.

Then it's down to a personal choice (be aware though that many car thieves know exactly what to look for, and the most likely places to look, and strip the tracker out almost immediately - So they're not as infallible as they once were)

Immobilizer: Well worth having - But make sure it's a Thatcham cat 1 approved immobilizer (helps not only with keeping the car safe, but also helps keep the insurance costs down)

Everyone seems to think that their alarm/immobilizer (and tracker for that matter), is the best available, so you need to do your own research into it. Certain manufactures have better reputations than others, so again, it's down to personal choice - No one can tell you that a certain one is:"THE one to have"
