If anyone is really into originality, I'll be replacing my shaft radio with a DIN soon. If you want to trade the radio housing that bolts under the dash (similar to a 78 308) so you can re-install a shaft radio, contact me. Otherwise I'll start cutting!

    Good luck my man!

I recently cut a CD into my old '77 dash. I left it to an "expert" with a sawzall.
He did pretty well, all things considered.

My 308 still has its original stereo -- a 2-knob shaft-style Blaupunkt. I want to install a CD player, but I've heard that the only way to do that is to cut out the old shaft-style radio housing. Is that correct? Putting aside any issues about keeping the car's stock radio housing, I'm concerned that an errant cut will harm the dash. Or is that the risk everyone has taken when they installed new stereos in their 308s? Thanks.

Yep....pretty nerve racking to watch. They used an air powered sawzall, a miniature of the big ones we use in construction.

He hit some metal plates embeded in the fibreglass dash...kept going trimming until the newer unit (mounting collar actually) slid into the opening. Yea, he knicked the vinyl once.......

What can I say? My one '77 still has the original cassette and some groovy round Blaupunkt surface speakers on the back deck.

I was moving toward more current equipment with the second '77 car. They invented these things called CDs awhile back.

I actually was given the new Blaupunkt CD player that went in...why?
No MP3 or satellite radio! Sigh.

    Hey Speedy,
You think it was tough to watch. I did it myself. Used a hack saw blade to "rough" the opening and then an air-powered grinder to fine tune the size until the radio fit. Man, that was stressful! ("What am I DOING??")

But now I have a nice mp3 playing CD unit with a radio that actually picks up stations. What an improvement. OK, so I lose at the concourse but at least I can blast good tunes when I drive. And with an mp3 player, I can burn over 100 songs on a CD so I hardly ever have to change the CD! (Who needs a changer in the back?) BTW, mine is a Blaupunkt too.
