I am looking to buy a good service manual for my 81 308. I am not a mechanic but would like to do some work myself. Does anybody know of a good one to get and where to buy it?

When you say you want to do some work yourself, what do you mean? Oil changes, filters, change plugs, stuff like that? Or changing timing belts and things like that?

If you just want to do some of the routine maintenance, just look at the owners manual for your car. It covers most routine stuff like oil changes, filters, bleeding brakes, changing bulbs, fuses, stuff like that. The workshop manuals are marginal and are written on the assumption that you are a trained mechanic. Frankly, in many instances, the parts manual is of more use, as it shows the exploded view of how parts go together. And, you'll find a lot of useful informations and instructions just by using the search function here.

There are some sites where you can download the manuals for free, so don't waste a lot of money buying a CD or copies of the manuals.

p.s. -- if you haven't done it already, make your first DIY project the installation of the Birdman fuse block replacement. Best upgrade you can make to the car. Requires almost no mechanical skills or experience, and the only tools needed are a screwdriver and a thin point marking pen (and maybe a pair of needle nose pliers if you can't grip the connectors to remove and reinstall them).
