Hello To all and happy motoring, I am in need of a detailed diagram and instructions for replacing a starter in a 80 308Gtsi. I hope that as a novice this will not be to difficult for me. any and all help is appreciated. many thanx, Lawrence 1
Easy job once you get the car up in the air. Disconnect the negative cable at the battery before you do anything. Make sure the car is properly supported on jack stands or a lift. Safety first. Remove the cables and the connector to the solenoid. Unbolt the bracket at the back of the starter motor to the block. Remove the three bolts on the bell housing that hold the starter (13mm heads). Drop the starter down and angle it around to get it out. If you are lucky, you won't have to move the header or remove the coolant pipe that runs down the bell housing side of the engine. If you are having starter problems, there will be a new high torque starter available soon. I have the prototype in my 308 GTS at the moment, just waiting to be able to kick it over and confirm that it is properly fitted, and the manufacturer will be going into production. They are far more efficient at turning the engine over, cheaper than even having the Bosch starter rebuilt, and it is smaller and weighs about 1/3 of what the Bosch starter weighs.
Check out this old thread with R&R details of starter and solenoid. http://70.85.40.84/~ferrari/discus/messages/256120/296860.html Various diagrams are available, what wiring details do you need?
I hope this will be as ez as it sounds. Is the newer starter available? and where can I get one? can you usually get the old one past the header pipes? Thanks, Lawrence 1
