Just bought a 77 308GTB & manual says to rev engine to 4-5k for 20 seconds when starting. Is this to get some oil moving or aggravate the neighbors or what? Does anyone actually do this?

I definitely wouldn't do this. Is the manual you refer to for a US model (with air injection)? Getting the exhaust system up to temperature more quickly will minimize the tailpipe emissions, but it's not good for the mechanical bits. On the later cat-equipped carbed-308 the cold fast idle was set in the 3~4K RPM range for the same emission reason, but most disable this.

once started i hold mine around 2k to ensure the alternator is charging and to let it warm up so that it will idle "cold". 4-5k seems to high for a stone cold engine.

....sure on that 4-5 k thing. Seems a bit high to me too. I keep mine about 1.5-2k till it'll keep from dropping below 1k. then as it warms up the rpms get progressively higher till around 3k or so. Mine has a eccentric cam between the carbs that does this automatically till it warms to a certain temp. then it drops off. I never use the choke either. Hence fiddling with the throttle a bit till she keeps going on her own. Usually only a 30sec.or less. I'd be careful on too high of rpm's till shes properly warmed up. Though I tend to be overly cautious. I'm never in too much of a hurry when I go out for a spin not to do otherwise. :)

    Congrats and enjoy!

4000-5000 for 20 secs after a cold start?
No way could I bring myself to do that unless it's a F1 engine or something. What Manual are you referring to?

Heck, the 3.2 Manual says keep it under 4000 until oil temp is in mid-range, which is normally about 10 mins for me (& that's in Sydney where it's warm!).

    I'm confused.
