Ok, been driving my 1979 308 on crappy potholed British roads this weekend. I suspect my steering bushes are gone. On every bump there is a squeak from the steering column. I also noticed that there seems to be very slight play in the column. I have a Hills Engineering spacer fitted but that is tight, it is somewhere at the base.

I have confirmed it is the steering not Targa roof or anything because with the car stationary there is still a slight play in the column and when I push it up I hear the squeak.

I am very non technical but plan to give the car to a 1970s Porsche specialist to look at this issue (no old Ferrari specialists are local), are there any specific issues I should tell them of? I'm pretty sure from reading on here it is probably the bushes that have gone, can anyone recommend better off the shelf replacements and is this likely to be a big job?

    Thanks, any help appreciated.

I think you can find the play in the column fairly easily. If you look under the dash you can see the joints. I can't remeber for sure, you might have to remove the vinyl cover under the steering wheel (4 screws) to see them all. Turn the wheel slowly and watch for the play. If all of those are good, the next place to check is at the connection to the rack. If you remove the left front wheel, you can watch that joint just forward of the pedal box as you reach through the drivers window and move the steering wheel.

I did the same thing recently and that's where I found the play. I tightened that joint and now it's gone.

    Good luck.
