third time in the past 2 years my 1985 308 qv got stuck in gear. when it happens, it is always during parking maneuvers. last time, my general mechanic figured out how to get it unstuck by taking off the bottom cover and moving the linkage into proper position. what can i do to prevent it? is it more likely a worn part, or is there an adjustment that can be made? thanks in advance
i cannot stress this enough: YOU MUST BE SURE YOUR CLUTCH CABLE IS AS NEW AND NOT STRETCHED! my former black 308 GTB had its original clutch cable, and it was stretched almost 3 inches. a new one from GT CAR PARTS and an adjustment on the lift, and the car shifted better than a new one. car already had a new clutch. before you start messing with your linkage, replace the clutch cable and set it up per the manual. hope this helps.
I have had to have my linkage forks re-adjusted every few years... it's a common issue with these cars. As mantioned, if it happens more often than that, might be your clutch cable. If you get STUCK in a gear, you can sometime get past that if you loosen the shift gate... sometimes that's enough to get you past the mis-alignment so you can drive the car home or to the shop.
See if this help, when mine got stuck in 2nd and 3rd and couldn't get it in reverse, I found out that the nut on the through bolt that connects the shift rod to the shift shaft just above the cross member was missing and the bolt was barely hanging. I installed new locknut and a lock washer and I was good to go.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh , , of course , undo the gate ............. and I chose the ride home in the tilt tray !
