I am trying to find the original spring lbs for my gt4. The workshop manual says colour coding shows the poundage but doesn't say what each colour means. Mine are white coded. Any ideas ? Would guess around 200lbs?

    The front spring rate given in the 110/75 308GT4 WSM is "mm./kg. 0,32" (page F4) = 175 lbs/in

    The rear is "mm.kg. 0,3" [sic] (page G4) = 186 lbs/in

but not sure if that applies to all year & version 308GT4 (but you are in the right ballpark).

The colour-coding is not for spring rate (although all springs will have some variation in rate). What's more important to the car maker is the "spring length at rated static load" so the coachwork sits level side-to-side -- and, I believe, that's what the colour-coding is used to indicate so they get a matched pair of the same length.

Fantastico. Thanks for the prompt reply Steve. Point noted about the colour coding.

Having found this out, throw this info out of the window and go with 300/300 front/rear. MUCH better ride that way!

Indeed Hans thats exactly what I intend to do! Just need the poundage of the existing so that the new springs can be made to the correct height also allowing the ride height to be dropped an inch or so to acheive the look of your car. The new (say 300lb) springs will I recon need to be about 2inches lower to accomodate this but the spring manufacturer is going to work out the new length with the data of current free length, fitted length, ride height reduction and current and new stiffness.

    Hi John,

Are you going to retain the stock Konis?? If so, I'd be a bit cautious with the amont of reduced spring height because it is easy to go to low and high center/ bottom out/ have a tire hit the fender on turning into a driveway, particularly if you have changed from stock wheels/tires.

If you are using QA-1s or other adjustable spring perch height shocks, no problem, you can just crank it up a bit.

    HTH,
    chris
