I was wondering whether the life span of the timing belts is determined only by mileage. My belts were changed about 10,000 miles ago but that was 8 years ago...does the rubber deteriorate, regardless of use, given this much time has passed?

You could search, but no, yours are bad now.

30K miles or 5 years, whichever comes first!

I have some on 12 years old, but I just idle around town. You'd better put your flame suit on now!

    Bye! Lunchtime!

Be carefull. Belts seem to break (teeth grind-off at smaller crank pully) at idle. Have not heard of any breaking at high RPM. This makes sense, the action is much smoother at higher RPMs and very choppy at idle.

Age is generally the determining factor as these cars are just not driven that much. 8-years is not that long but you should look at replacing them. If you have any DIY skills at all, save yourself $3000 and do it yourself. It's not hard.

USD 3000 is a bit steep - here in the UK a straight-forward belt change on a 308 is around GBP 300/400 (USD 550-750)

Sean F. talks a lot, while waiting, so naturally, they charge him more!

Sean F., Two Tons of Steel plays at Cosmo's Cafe tonight, get the lil' lady and come on out! Starts at 10:30.

    See ya there!

I'm just kiddin' (about idling, that is) on my 12 y.o. belts, we drove 2,400 miles home with it, then on to the FFQC in Louisiana, without even checking them. But, we live for DANGER! LOL!

Did about 120MPH all the way from Death Valley, CA, thru West Texas!!!!
