Took this pic of the GPS for confirmation.
    Note the top Max speed.

It either happened in the Holland tunnel, 5th or 6th or 10th aves in the city.
I'm not sure where. It's sort of a blur at that speed. ;)
The pic was snapped at the posted limit, fyi.

    (BTW: it's not a photoshop)

My Garmin shows something like 675MPH top speed recorded.
I bring it with me on trips when I've got a window seat as a 'sky map'.

Knowing how driving is in NYC, that's probably METERS per hour. :)

Wow, you're right - 65 mph is a record speed for anywhere w/in 10 miles of NYC!

Hopefully not in your lap, in the last hour of flight. :)

I suspect you won't even be allowed to carry an issue of Food & Wine onto an aircraft soon.

Well I used to use the suction cup mount directly to the window only during 'approved' times, but yeah I won't be surprised if things do get even more restrictive now...

It's funny, I've been using GPS on commercial flights to help pass the time (and for night flights when you look down and wonder what that town/city is...) for about 5 years, and only twice have stewardesses inquired as to what it was. Last flight a few weeks ago she was amazed, asking if it was a 'special' unit for airplanes.
Once a stewardess asked me if I was allowed to use it in flight, and I said that I think so since it's only receiving, not transmitting anything. She was satisfied with that and walked away.

It doesn't say anything about having explosive devices in your pants. That must be OK.

    Yep, miles.

Divine intervention? Time/Space warp? I dunno.

But the unit has been reset and we'll see if it ever happens again.

I've seen a top speed of 498 kph on my Garmin once. Funny gremlin. Thinks it's here now, and there 5 seconds later. And calculates max speed from that. I guess one erroneous jump in location is enough for such a funny reading...

The Garmin GPS on our boat does that if it momentarily loses a signal; the jump to the new location occurred, as far as the GPS can tell, instantly so I have max speeds of over 400knots showing. Some of them have been at anchor as the boat has drifted around the anchor rode when the wind/tide changes! :)

GPS has no idea what you are doing or where you are heading. It can only calculate based on what has already happened or what it thinks has happened.

The plane that overshot the runway by 150 miles in MN had a suction cup ring on the pilot's windshield.
