I'm ordering a new set of tyres off flea bay this week for my 16" comps
I'm going for toyo proxes as they seem to be quite well priced.

At the moment the fronts are 205/55/16 , backs are 225/50/16
Can anyone tell me if that is definately the correct size/combination.
The TRX on the original wheels are the same size front/back , so should the 16" be the same i.e could I go for 225/50/16 on the front also
or are they 205 front/225 back for a reason

Also (I cant find the thread) but I think someone mentioned something about dot or E numbers can anyone tell me what these are , so I can check with the sellers before I purchase

    Cheers chaps:thumbsup:

If you are running the TRX's then you would have the same size rim front and rear, and the same size tyre.

16in rims often come in a 7in front and 8in rear combo, hence the difference in tyre widths.

The rolling circumference of the 205/55 R16 and 225/50 R16 is almost identical. It is also almost identical to the rolling circumference of the original TRX's; so you dont have to worry about adjusting the gearing, speedo, or whether the tyres will rub.

That is the stock size combination for my ’83 QV.

I went from TRX garbage to factory 16s, 7in F 8in R and 225/50s F and 255/50 R , all ZR rated. This is standard size on 288s and TRs and have had no problems. I am going to lower it with QA1s or similar. Lot of grip

My just purchased '83 QV still has the 390 TRX's with 50% left on chromed (stock?) wheels. While I'm not overly happy about the chromed finish as it does not look stock, but I can live with it. But, are the TRX tires worth using up or should I start looking for a deal on a 16" wheels & tires swap? With enough tread to last me 4-5 more years, should I even worry about this?

Yeah, ditch the chrome wheels. They look kind of tacky on a Ferrari. superformance.co.uk has a good deal on 16" wheels. You can order them in stock color, gold, gunmetal, and one other color that escapes me at the moment. Ferrari's '70s racing cars all had gold wheels, and from the photos I have seen of 308s with gold wheels, it looks fantastic! Good luck!

Just remember that tires get old regardless of wear. You’ll get different opinions on how old is too old, but I’ve heard any where from 6 to 10 years. After a while the tread becomes hard and they lose a lot of traction, to the point where they really aren’t safe. Here’s an article on reading date codes from The Tire Rack:

OK, I'll start looking for some 16" wheels and tires then. I'm a new F owner and would like advice on which source for the wheels and what tires you all recommend. I like to stay stock looking for the '83 period and I will not be driving on the track. I would like to get the best ride but still keep some decent handling charactoristics. Here is California, I do not intend to test the limits of my car on the public roads. Just nice weekend drives with short bursts of "fun" driving on curves and such.

One more issue: do I get 4 16's the same width or 7" fronts and 8" rears - and does it really matter other than for looks?

    Thanks for your help!

I just got Goodyear Eagle F1’s in the stock sizes for my ’83 and am very pleased with them. The old fronts were slightly wider than stock and, in my opinion, made the steering feel somewhat heavy.
