Mark I finally took my 575 engined special out for a reasonable drive and thought I'd let you know that the 17" x 9" straight thru mufflers are plenty quiet enough up to 3000 rpm through the local villages. I'm sure they could be 25% smaller and still be very OK, maybe more. The rasp in the 4-8000 range is pretty spine tingling and I don't even miss the induction roar I used to get from the Webers on the old 365 4cam engine. Because of the torque available it's really unneccessay to use more than 2000rpm in built up areas and you could maybe even get away no mufflers at all. Maybe I'll try it....Maybe you should try it without mufflers first and see how you go... Performance is 'sparkling' and on the dry patches of road it's easy to spin the wheels in 4th. Didn't have enough road to really nail it in 5th & 6th. Will
Saw this article on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1977-Ferrari-308-with-Daytona-V-12-Road-Test-From-1985_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3357745e9aQQitemZ220510576282QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories Is this what got you thinking? Didn't feel like sifting trough all the pages in case I missed it. Anyone know where this car is now? This is a great thread.
Very cool that your car is driving! I'm not going to try without mufflers, but it's good to hear you think the noise isn't too bad with low restriction mufflers. When I had the blower motor I found I shifted at about 2500 I town ar there was no real point in reving any higher and keeping the revs down sure does quite things down. This new engioen probably won't have quite the low end the blower motor did or probably not quite what yours has either, but it shouldn't be too bad...I'm guessing about 350 ft-lbs at 2500 and climbing to 500-550 at 6000.
I saw that article when it came out...I was about 18 or 20 I guess and in the air force. I remember thinking " Oh I need one of those"....of course I had no money, no place to work on it and no clue how to build something like that.
Lana was out with the girls so I got a little time in the shop. Header #2 is ready to weld I think. No pics though until tomorrow it as Lana took the camera with her. Edit: camera came home. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
My 4 catalytic converters are prettier - - - NOT! This is georgeous looking at the project in many different directions. It's a shame Enzo isn't around to see this. Didn't he commend the fellow who put the 2-cam V 12 in a 308? What are you going to call this when it's done? Will you leave the "308" on the back?
Just considering what kind of stress will be on the exhaust manifold studs with that weight hanging out there vibrating?
Thanks. I was thinking 458 until stupid ferrari took it. I'll probably do what ferrari did with the laster 208s and just call it a GTS QV with no 308 tag.
I don't know....I've never heard of an engien breaking though, if anyhting does go wrong it's usually the hearders cracking. The system will be supported be the muffler mounts too and the slip joint should remove some of the stress caused by trh engine torquing.
Hopefully a little room between the headers and the firewall to put a little extra thermal insulation?
Mark- That is going to sound so awesome. Any thoughts yet on a muffler system? You could adapt some Capristo valves and have something that would sound merely great or, at a flick of a remote, cataclysmic. Taz Terry Phillips
Well see if the UPS guys do any better at following directions and actually pick up the cams they say they will. I cant really weld with little one helping as hes lost interest in the new sand box so I moved on the fitting up header #3. I'll do my best, but getting useful pics of the installed headers is going to be pretty hard. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Here's a little something to help keep you motivated. Be sure to check out the polished pipes and turn up the sound! Joe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-nMvCfihVNU&feature=related
Interestingly they are doing the same 6 into 2 into 1 with the collectors as close together as possible and a cone at the end design that Burns recommended for me....of course they are using bigger shorter pipes and doing it neater but the basic design looks the same.
Got any relatives in Alabama? http://www.misscellania.com/miss-cellania/2009/11/14/amazin-blaze-heatin-ana-beatin-welding-service.html
Actually, I was born in Alabama... unfortunately, I'm not permitted to translate as this would reveal the secret wisdom of the South to a Northerner. Sorry about that, David. Is there anything else I could do for you instead? All the best, Andrew.
I'm only temporarily based in Glasgow. I was born and raised (until 14) in Huntsville, Alabama - which is a pretty cool place to . Then spent 2 years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before coming to the UK. All the best, Andrew.
Born and raised in Birmingham, AL myself (just outside in Alabaster actually). Moved to Texas just before I turned 14 and been here ever since. Wow, that was 17 years ago. Guess I'm officially a Texan now. Headers are looking fantastic Mark!!!!
