These are not stock cams being hard welded up to size, these are brand new billet steel cams...a LOT more work involved but it was the only option to make cam to fit TR heads but with the 400i firing order and timing chain.

No need, steel springs will keep the valve under control well past any rpm I would feel comfortable spinning the rest of the engine.

I cleaned up cyl 1 mostly. I figured there was no reason to make it perfect because it will need reshaping for flow anyway.

I also mostly finished the temp seats. I just need to trim the length a bit and they are done. I didn't have anyway to hold ther seat cutter in the lathe so I had to back and forth lathe, mill, lathe. I made them out of steel instead of alum so they mostly stay as is when I touch them during porting as the steel is so much harder then the head.

Mark, Why use the seat cutter on the Temp seats? Wouldn't it be easier to just cut them on the lathe?

It could be cut on the lathe but it's a complicated profile and I don't have a CNC lathe.

That makes sense now that I see the profile. The picture didn't do it justice. I guess by the time you adapted the cutter to fit on a boring bar it was just easier to head over to the mill? Hopefully you only need two temp seats for the whole project and can move them from port to port?

That’s what I was thinking. 5 minutes to move the chuck and indicate it in time 2 seats is 10 minutes (after spending double that looking for another way) vs a couple hours to make a holder.

2 should do it unless I damage them.

    Hi Mark,

Where did you get the holder for the seat cutter? Is it custom made or a piece that can be purchased? Goodson has the 3D cutter system but it is a bit pricey.

That's pretty clever. A first I just thought you were using a spare chuck in the mill but keeping the piece chucked up and just moving the chuck you don't have to worry about losing your center when you put it back in the lathe. Even better for when your chucks are a little beat up like mine are. I'll have to remember that trick.

    Tom,
The holder is borrowed so I'm not sure where it came from. I'm sure I was purchased and it had a swivel in the back (it's design to center in the guide with a pin) which I popped off. I'll see if I can find out where it comes from for you.

    Hey Mark,

This is a little bit off subject, and you may already be aware of these guys, but rumor has it that you like doing things your self and I thought you might be interested in a company that makes coatings for exhaust manifolds, pistons, gears, etc that can be self applied.

I have no affiliation with this company and haven't tried their products yet but the web-site is very interesting.

Your project keeps looking great. Good luck and keep at it!

    Hello Mark,

Not to jump on the bandwagon but - I read your thread, took two days, and I cant begin to express how much I am impressed with your skill and ingenuity. I am going to follow with much anticipation of what you do next.

Good luck on your monumental project!

Sorry, I've had other muchless fun things to do/deal with this week, the most serious is talk of moving...which would cause some serious project delays. Also, starting next week Lana will be home in the evening so I'm not exatly sure when car time will be.....I'll have to get that worked out.

I have to get the last of the basement junk...I mean extra parts on eay this weekend to make it at least appear I am trying to find the cam money.

It's just been a bad week all around project wise.
