I took the finish cuts and finished drilling the bolt holes in the hole flanges this morning and found a small issue this morning. The top flanges sit about 2* of square making 4* between them. I traced the issue back to the flanges on the heads which I appear to have cut at about 18* instead of 20* for somehow. I don't really want to mess with the angle on the heads at this point becaause the bolt holes are square to the flange face and I would like them to stay that way. There really is nothing majic about 20*, it was just intended to make things easier because it's a round number. So it looks like I;ll be re-cutting the top flange which means it will get thinner and that will make the people who wanted it lighter anyway happy but it also means I'll need to mill the bottom side of the flange as well as the top or it will look stupid. Tomorrow I'll profile the lower flange while the mill is still at 20*. Once that is done I'll reset to 22* and fix the top side of the upper flange and do all the machining on that face, then square the mill up, flip the manifold over and try to figure out how to machine the back side of the top flange. I'm still hoping to finish up this weekend....we'll see. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
After you profile the lowers, is the knee on your mill deep enough to just put the assembled block up there and fly cut the top of uppers? As far as the backsides...I don't know that it would "look stupid". None of your work looks stupid. Probably just an ugly reminder of a small miss that bugs you like it bugs me. Once you've fixed it... We've always found radiusing edges will hide a few thousandths of side to side inconsistencies. Rick
I'm not sure, I'll measure it. yeah...I have to fix it. I can bolt it down and fly cut the outside part that shows easy enough....I may call the part I can't reach easily a support rib
It looks like there will be a slight delayl next week while I to go to Atlanta to put out a fire. Call - "Mark, it breaks when I do this, I broke 3 this morning". ..........so I need to fly 1000 miles to say - "Oh yes, that is one of the very best ways to break these and it is also pretty dangerous. You really shouldn't do that".
Hey Mark, Drop me a PM if you're going to spend a little time around Atlanta. Maybe we can meet up. JD
But it doesn't need to be square ... who cares if the throttle bodies sit at a 4* angle to each other. Pete
I got the profile on the lower flange cut this morning. I still need to hit them with the sander but they are mostl done. Upper flanges tomorrow. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I fthey were angled in they would look "right" and I would let it go, but angled out just makes no sense really. I want them to sit square because that will let me easily raise or lower the air box (with the velocity stack tops in it)for tuning with just a simple spacer change....angles would make this a bit more difficult.
hmmm.....I think I've about made the entire thing with bits from the scrap pile so I don't know if putting it back then taking it back out would change anything.
Mark, This would look cool. Imagine 12 under your hood. They are filters that go directly over the trumpet of the velocity stack. They come in different sizes. As you can see they are very low profile. Pegasus Racing has these available. The intake noise would be as satisfying as the exhaust note! http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecID=6252 http://www.pegasusautoracing.com/group.asp?GroupID=AIRHORNFILTER Who needs a pcv valve? road draft baby! They are very cool looking but I'm a big believer in pactual air filters particularly on street cars.....no idea where I'm going to put air filters, but I think I want them.....maybe the trunk sililar to the 355/360 setup??
This shows you must have faith it's all going to hang together long enough to get a chance to wear if you don't fit them
I can't imagine NOT running the very best filters, especially after all the work that has been to this engine.
That has to be the funniest quotes I have ever read in this forum, probably because of who who said it.
No pictures from this morning. I quickly cleaned up the profile on the lower flange so it looks the same only better and then did a test cut (1/2 the final depth) at 18* (not 22*, that was 2* the won't way) and it's really close but 18.5* would be better so I'll kick the head another 1/2* then start the finish work.....and get the TBs mounted and on with something else.
We all feel bad for you Mark, deep inside. We would rather see you have 2 months of uninterrupted time in the shop.
I THINK I'm out of the atlanta trip...we'll see. I remilled ther tops of the flanges and they look pretty good. I can't show you any pics because little one seems to have wandered off with the wire to download them
