There plenty of flow area so flowing enough air flow is no issue. The volume is about tuned frequency and that will have to be what is unless I want to alter the deck lid.
Mark - All the detail work has looked great all along this thread and now the final product is starting to crystallize and look fabulous. Pretty cool how much your little guy has grown and can help you out - there are all sorts of great lessons you are already passing on to him by setting a fine example. A thought on the cylinder heads now that you are at the point of fabricating the airbox. Will the fit be tight enough that the thickness of a compressed head gasket (X2) would upset the spacing? It would only be .010" or so each gasket, but you did mention things were really tight. Just a thought. Gary
I had at the the chuck of QV plenum with a band saw and tacked in a filler piece to get the length right. Once it's welded I'll mill in the ribs and make a place in the middle for a chrome horse emblem. Next I'll an inch to the width front and back. What about when the heads need skimming, etc. maybe in the future? How ever you design this airbox you need to take that all into account. Pete
Since you will be modifing the rear hatch anyway, you could have the plentum attached to the rear hatch so that when you open it up, it would lift off the TB's to expose the engine for viewing? My guess is you will doing a lot of "viewing" and taking the plentum off and on will be a pain. All that would be needed is a custom compression type gasket to seal when the plentum is lowered to the TB's. Not sure if you thought of that much work but at this point....
No one really pointed out that page 200 was opened by Mark, lol. Congrats on the headway thus far. I love this project!
I really do understand good filtration, and the work youve done/doing is beyond ambitious and certainly worthy of good preservation. However, that motor is not only one of a kind, its montrously pretty. If it were me, and I know its not, I would risk a somewhat shorter engine life/faster cylinder wear and put some decent foam filters on those throttle bodies rather than hide its beauty and your amazing workmanship under that huge plenum. Its not like its going to be a daily driver taking excursions down occasional dirt roads. Or is that what your planning? And the sound that monster would make with those throats allowed to breath should be equally monstrous. Perhaps Mark would allow a poll vote to decide? Marks V-12 conversion: Plenum, or bella machina? It really looks incredible. Any gear head worth his dirty fingernails should be drooling. Makes a guy wanna go bankrupt buying machine equipment and welders.
I love the look of open TBs too but covering them is really the best answer. Think of it as lingerie for the engine
if it was me I would build a clean laboratory environment to run it in and filter the incoming air twice to avoid having to re-do anything whatever Mark decides to do, once the car is parked at a show he could remove the airbox to show off those throttle-bodies.
What I'm doing will look at least as good and will work much better. You guys have to remember you're looking at pictures I took at an angle that shows the air box idea well but from the side you get a completely unobstruct view of the TBs .
Mark, Make a mold of the air box top when finished and have one cast in lexan. Good filters are the best idea. Tom...
I did a little more work on the air box and I think you can kind of get an idea of what it's going to look like when it's done. The shot from the back shows is set at about the right hieght and you can still see the TBs, the whole air box will sit above them. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Looks great Mark and still shows off some T&A (throttles and airbox...). I think the stock ribs, Ferrari and QV badges and perhaps a pony will give the exact "could it be stock?" look you're going for. You are an artist... Cheers
Saturday endup hot rod day in my shop when a couple friends stopped by with projects but I did get to spend a couple hours welding and grinding the air box. I'm thinking I'll put the air inlets on the ends,,,but if I want the top to pop off easily I guess they should be on the bottom part no the top part......which will make the seal a little harder to do. I'll need to think about it a bit I guess. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I'm thinking I am going to have to agree with everyone else who's STRONGLY suggesting the lexan top on the plenum. I know you want this thing to look stock and like Enzo himself built this as a mad scientist edition and everything, but that would just be amazing. Maybe as an optional plenum? You've surely got enough aluminum laying around there to make 2 of them. LOL Laters, Brian
