Maybe I missed it somewhere, but have you had a look at the Megasquirt option? You can basically build in anything you want to......
Fantastic craftsmanship by the way. I check this every evening to see what you been up to.

I personally can't understand why these engine managments have to be so expensive. I would think a used Pentium4 laptop should handle 12 cilinders at ease and in the meanwhile play your MP3 and do navigation. But I guess it is not that simple. For the dedicated engine management computers they use ancient but proven processors from 20 years ago it seems for some reason. If proper software on a P4 laptop that controls an outputboard to trigger injectors and spark would do, it would have been done of course.

That's what they claim, but in truth it's a primitive system capable of only the most basic things and that’s fine for many applications but it’s not really capable of most all the things I want to do. As you try to do more than the basic stuff it becomes such a hodge-podge of boxes and code it’s really only of interest to electronics geek type who enjoy the challenge vs mechanic geek types like me who want 1 box that I can plug in and have work.

    thanks.

The Intel or AMD processors would work just fine, the MS software will not! Windows running a car? Then you would have to press the horn, brake and clutch pedal instead of cnt, alt, del, everytime your car didn't work!

I'm not trying to stop the wheel spi, just limit it to 18% which is about optimal for acceleration :)

That is silly on more levels than your joke. If you were going to do that, you would take the aforementioned laptop and install some flavor of Linux along with your engine management software. Windows is not built into the processor.

However, what is even sillier is that while the laptop's processor has tons of horsepower to process the data, the laptop has none of the needed hardware to interface with the data source and data controlled devices. Last time I looked I didn't see USB ports on any MAF sensors or fuel injectors. :D

In other words, most of the ECU, be it Megasquirt or Haltech or whatever is hardware that takes electrical signals from devices and converts them into bit streams the processor can work with, as well as the hardware drivers for the injectors that convert the bit streams into electrical signal. The actual "computer" in there is only a small part of the deal. That's why they run ancient processors. They're not doing all the other things that PCs do, instead just one task: taking the inputs from the sensor's A/D converters and producing outputs to the injector driver's D/A converters. The fancier ones have a few more capabilities but that's pretty much it.

Realistically, one could design an ECU that had all the conversion hardware and had a USB or firewire or even an eSATA interface, or even just a regular old serial port or two, to allow a PC to do all the processing. You could get all kinds of data logging and highly sophisticated maps with realtime control of the parameters. But then you would always have to have a PC on board. You would have to get rid of the spinning disk hard drive and install an expensive SSD for reliability, because spinning disks don't handle Gs very well. Plus laptops are not really that small. Most of the time you wouldn't even want to see it, so where do you put it where it doesn't get damaged? Maybe in an SUV you could build it into the dash, but in a Ferrari?!

Basically it would be like trying to drill someone's cavity with a drillpress: you might be able to make it work, but it's the wrong tool for the job.

Where did I mention laptop? I meant that the common processors used in PC are up to the task. Of course a different OS and interface circuits would have to be designed. BTW, Linux is a turd for doing the job as well. USB would't be the best, direct connections to the I/O and memory buses of the CPU would be better.

So I'm working on the efi job and had to pull the flywheel to install a crank trigger which gave me a chance to weigh it. Stock assembly looks like 32.5 lbs vs my new assembly that came in at 16.5lbs. So almost exactly 1/2 the weight but as you can see in the pics the diameter of everything is much smaller on the new stuff so the effective flywheel weight is about 1/4 stock I think.....it should be a very snappy engine when you hit the throttle.

Once I get the stock bellhousing cleaned up I'll take side by side before/after pics of that too.

Well since I’m working of the side job in the shop, I decided I NEEDED a new tool/toy to play with upstairs well I’m watching the little one.

I bought the latest pro version of the engine simulation software I've been using. The new software uses the same (but slightly revised/refined) calculation as the original software for doing quick estimates, but also offer a wave flow calculation for more exact work. This allows the software to make predictions much more accurately about cam timing and also calculate the effects of port size, length, and taper as well as header tube length, diameter, taper (step headers), collector diameter and length. It will also perform iterations of multiple variables to maximize hp, torque, area under the curves and a few other things.

I figured buying/building stuff twice really isn’t an option and I’m getting ready to buy some pretty expensive stuff and am think of cutting and welding the ports on pretty expensive heads so it would be best to have more information.

My old software (dynosim SC) was $150, I’ll be putting it on ebay next week for $75. If anybody here wants it pm me. It works pretty well after you get the hang of it but you have to work with a lot of pre-set options vs design your own.

It was nothing you needed. Stuff like this is often more dangerous than helpful becasue the software will alway give you an answer and pretty graphs, but if you put garbage in (and it's very easy to do) the answer and all the pretty graphs will also be garbage. Plus you already have all your parts so you just need to put them together and enjoy the drive.

Mark- With that flywheel, shutting off the ignition will result in an instant cessation of noise and revs. I love the sound of a light flywheel engine shutting down. Almost as much as I love the sound they make when increasing revs. You will have to recalibrate your normal traffic smooth upshift hesitation, however.

I was scared itwould be too light.....I don't know.

When I put this clutch pack on the v8 I left the stock flywheel becasue I was afraid with the light clutch and the light flywheel it would be too light and hard to drive. The clutch is about 1/2 the weight of the assembly and this clucht pack is 1/2 the weight of stock , making the assembly with a stock flywhell about 3/4 stock weight and 1/2 stock effect.....and I honestly couldn't tell the difference.

This set up is lighter yet but there is a heavier crank and more pistons so it shouldn't need as much flywheel as the V8. We'll see.....I almost made the flwheey part out of aluminum instead of steel which would have cut another 4 lbs or so off but I chickened out.

It does look a lot smaller and light sitting next to stock parts then it did all by itself.

I got started reading the manual for the new software....300 pages. Its got some cool stuff....a lot of which I probably would know had I read the manual for the last software, but this one is twicew as many pages so there is a lot more going on.

It has the specs for 6000 cam shafts loaded. This version also has some generic cams , like steet/strip or roadrace, or whatever so you can start with the generic ans play until you like the result then hit the search button and it will search the library to find the options closest to what you designed. very cool, then I'll know exactly what to ask the cam grinder for.

It has a good long discussion about webers for those interested and why they are great for low to mid range engine but less than ideal for higher rpm engines….which means they aren’t really the best choice for a Ferrari.

Along the same line and in the same section are individual throttle bodies which is why I happened to pay attention to the weber stuff. To be a real ITB the flow to each cylinder need to be independent so as soon as I put an air box on top that isn’t true anymore and the right way to model it is as a large plenum manifold.

I’m going to have a couple weeks of work to do when the software gets here in a couple days. Look for all kinds of graphs that claim the show all kinds of things while appearing to make almost sense......

I messed around with the old software a little more before I send it out and transfered the data to excel so I could put the options on 1 graph.

A lot of hp...we'll see what the new software says and I'll add it to the same graph.

I forgot to post this last night. For those that were wondering, here's what would happen if I dropped the compression a touch and threw a blower on it at about 6 psi.....not that I would.
