Why wouldn't it be a fair comparison?

Weren't those 2 cars direct competitors when they were new?

It's completely unfair given the context of the article - investment.

When someone from my age group (and younger) thinks of a Ferrari - the 308 is the car they think of (or, arguably, the Testarossa -- but that's not featured here).

Factor in that the 308 is truly a driver's car, and I can't see how the Jalpa stacks up in terms of investment. It may be a peer in performance, but it's not on the same level IMHO.

Oh the Jalpa is a lusty lady indeed....cant compare the two. The 3x8 is like a toyota camry compared to the Jalpa.

Peer in performance? Per the specs the Jalpa clearly outperforms the 308...at least on paper. Investment wise? They are both just another way to turn a large fortune in to a small fortune! ;)

Look at the specsheet for that 308 though: 1500 kg kerb weight? Must be USA spec. 205 Bhp? No idea what spec, did they take 2 carbs off that engine? I believe with that spec it'd accellerate 0-60mph in 7.3 secs, but the real world with a Euro spec carb car would look somewhat different.
Jalpa has a sweet engine but suspect build quality. Too boy-racer-ish with that wing too. Funny, there was one for sale here as well last year with a seized engine (since made running and for sale again)

In any case, where I am, so far the 308 wins the investment race by a countrymile and then some. Let's see what happens in the next 25 years.

Funny how the 308 is a Euro car (RHD) so it has the hotter cams and no smog crap and hence better than 205HP. Yet they give the Euro figures for the Jalpa! Not fair! LOL!

How did they manage to only get 7.3 to 60? The engine must not have been tuned correctly.......

Where's Carreaper? I think he can vouch for the remarkable "quality" of the Jalpa.

205 Flywheel HP in a 3000+lb car is how! Probably would have done the 1/4 in around 15.5 at around 95MPH - pretty anemic :)

If that's a Euro car, they misquoted power output or failed to tune it correctly. I have a g-tech meter and have a verified 6.4 second 0-60 time.

They may have misquoted the HP on the Ferrari but unless they also misquoted virtually everything else, including the engine size, compression ratio and weight of the two cars, there is no way the 308 would compete strictly on performance. Based on the rest of the specs the Jalpa has 500 more ccs of higher compression engine and around 200 lbs less weight.

Totally agree there. Jalpa undoubtedly has a leg-up on pretty much everything. It is undoubtedly the epitome of the 80s hairy chested machismo man car. Not my cup of tea, but a neat car regardless.

I'll still go with the 308 as well. I saw a few of these at the French & Italian car show 2 weeks ago and they are far from attractive in person. The back engine cover is horrid. It looks like it's a solid piece of plastic!

well maybe they didnt misquoted the jalpa kerb weight but i reckon it isnt 200lbs lighter than a 308 gts especially in euro spec. in stock form wet jalpa's are 3300lbs plus tanks not. still its a very cool and charismatic ride

    cheers

How many racing Jalpa's did you see back in the day?? Hmmm can't think of any nor any I've seen today :)
If someone knows of one be interesting to see. The 308 has a following that the Jalpa will just never see.
