I've tried looking through previous posts but the server crash took out all the pics. I want to fabricate my own window crank for my 1984 QV, does anyone have a good pic with some dimensions they could post? Thanks!

By window crank, do you mean "Manual" window crank?

I had copied these pics from a previous post, but I'm unsure if all 308 emergency window cranks are the same (and something is not quite right because the 3 1/4" dimension is shown much longer than the 4 7/8" dimension -- i.e., perhaps the 4 7/8" is really the overall length):

Yes an emergency window crank. I have some manufacturing capability so I was thinking of producing a small run of these cranks to offer to those (like me) in need of one that functions...but wont be OEM. Any detailed drawings will help, or if anyone has one that I could borrow for a day to dimension it. Is there an interest?

I have one just like that pictured above. I bought it from from Ferrari UK a few years ago and and they were certain it was the right one. Damned if I can get it to work!!

When I took apart my windows to clean the gearboxes attached to the electric motors a while back, I could not figure out how the crank would work, since it turns the main gear/cable pulley that is attached to a worm gear which would seem to prevent the main gear from turning, unless there is some way that the crank disengages the worm gear. I tried the crank on my Mondial and it doesn't work on that car either. I'm baffled. I decided to just fix the power windows!

I have never been able to get a demonstration from anyone of one of these cranks actually working.

If someone can come up with a working version, or a drawing of it, I'll produce a small run......anyone have one that works....and if so what year is their car?

I've got one in 2 parts...

It'd be perfect for the project! I just have to extract the keyed part from the window motor... :O

    ;)
I was merrily cranking my window up & down by hand because the motor couldn't move it since I'd put it together with the cable too tight... :(
Well I didn't pause long enough to consider the correct direction to turn it and when it wouldn't go one way, I turned the other, harder and harder... till it broke. I'll attempt to extract the top of it and will trade it for a copy... ;)

A while back, the ignition switch on my 308 QV broke while my window was down and I thought, no problem, I'll just get the crank and roll up the window. NO such luck. I couldn't get the crank to turn either way. I just thought the manual method had frozen up after 20 years of never being used.

I always thought that cranking the window up would screw up the motor anyway. Is this not true? I am assuming it is for putting it UP not down.

The hand crank works by pushing it into the slot until the spool holding the wire disengages from the screw assembly that, in turn, is connected to the electric motor. The object is to push the hand crank far enough in before you turn the crank. Perhaps someone has a window crank unit apart and can take some pictures. Anyway, Myles, if you are making a few hand cranks, I would be interested in one.

I'm kind of keeping tracking of how many are interested so i know the size of my production run, right now I'm guessing 20 pcs or so, if someone has one out there that they know works, we could get some acuriate dimensions, or better yet if I could borrow it for a few days, we'll be in business.

I have been looking for a window crank for quite a while also. I had no idea people had as much trouble with them as I have had. I figured mine was just scuffed so bad that it didn't work properly. In my case, the crank will not crank the window up, but it works fine for cranking the window down. Go figure! It's not smooth and only catches every 3rd or 4th turn/crank, but it does work for bringing the window down.

Why do you need to use the hand crank so much?

Are you 100% certain it's 100% engaged? It's a VERY tight fit into the housing so you have to push it very hard to get it all the way in. Once it's in it shouldn't miss like I think you're describing.

There are 42 units left and I am sorry to say....with over 800 views...only 8 people have expressed interest. If I can not generate larger volume...I'm afraid that will not be able to go ahead with production...I will loose my shirt...so lets hope some interest picks up!
