I just purchased a 1984 308. One of the windows is slow, the other only goes down about three inches. Is there a trick to getting the motor out, and getting the motor and cables back installed?

    Welcome and congrats!

Windows are indeed troublesome but sometimes its solidified grease in the motor..

Use the "search" function in the blue toolbar and enter "slow windows" you'll find LOTS of dicussions...

    Glad you found us here..

There's LOTS of tricks to getting the motor out, but inspect the pulleys and cables and window felt runners first to know what you are fighting with...

Clean every electrical plug too...fromthe switches to the motor and clean the grounds, maybe even run a fresh one thru the hinge area, if temporarily to see if it perks them up any...

The above posts, from Big Tex, are all good. Bring patience. Take everything out, rollers, tracks, everything. Clean and lube. I used white Lithium grease (People here, will argue forever about the right lube. Truth is, nearly anything will be better than what's in there now). Yes, the gearbox grease can be bad. Mine was the consistency of half-cured Bondo!!

We've had guys just hook a battery to the damn things with jumper cables.....I think that's a little extreme, but.......it proofs out how much resistance can build up in these circuits once connectors oxidize a little.....

    Welcome!

I agree with the above posts! Your best solution is to open the box, get rid of the old dried-up grease, and put new grease inside. You may hear of some other "bypass" methods, but why not treat it the proper factory way, right? And, Big Tex is right about the electrical connections, which are just as important.

Have you replaced the fuse blocks yet. Doing so can usually help with slow windows. I would start there first before digging into the motors.

    Tom,

Over the past two years I did EVERYTHING to remedy my slow windows (regrease, fuseblocks, window accelerators, new ball bearing pulleys, new glass run felt channel...etc.). I have threads on all these and had "OK" results. Collectively probably about 25% improvement in speed. My voltage meter readings indicated 7-9 volts at the motors during movement so I knew things were still not right. Jumper cabling power direct to the motor leads would produce the fast speeds so I knew the motors were still good.

The last thing I just did just two weeks ago (no thread yet), which made ALL THE DIFFERENCE was doing Crallscars' double relay modification and wiring gauge upgrade. Now my windows go up and down faster than my Ford crew cab - taking about 3 sec each direction. That was about a 190% improvement in speed. And I still have the original motors in the doors (which I initially thought were old and worn out).

Here's the link. Go to post#22 for the procedure. Do it all (grease, fuseblocks, etc.) But trust me...do the relays too!! If it still lacks speed, THEN look into changing out the motor(s).

You can make the windows work great. Keep us posted and good luck!!
