Hi guys.... new to ferrari chat. Have a '79 308 for 15 years and its been pretty bullet-proof. Drove home few weeks ago and turned key "off" but car kept on running like I never touched the key. (not dieseling, RUNNING!!). I stalled the car out to turn it off but the fuel pump and idiot lights stayed on until I disconnected the battery.

I thought it might be a defective ignition switch so I dropped the steering column and pulled the switch but it checked out fine. While the steering column and all electricals were disconnected, I re-connected the battery and the fuel pump immediately went back on again. Anybody had this trouble before?? vinnie

Dr. V it sounds like you may be having problems with the fuse block. Take a look at your relays and check the fuse block. Sounds like the fuel pump relay is not turning off with the key. I would check this out 1st and make sure that when the ign switch is off then none of the relays in the starting circuit or the FP are on.
By the way I haven't seen you around the valley lately with your car. Drop me a PM if you want to meet some day.

[Steve- I agree it sounds like a fuel pump relay---problem is....where is it?? I see the fuse (which is fine) and a whole bunch of relays on the dash but none are for fuel pump according to my (poor) shop annual. Is it somewhere else?

I've been around and driving everything---alternating between the E-type, 1989 911, '73 BMW 2002 and the Ferrari. Also finishing up engine swap on my '84 BMW 533 that I won 25 years ago in BMW raffle. Unfortunately, not enough time to play with cars so I get to work on stuff few hours a month at best!

Anyhow, my 308 has been laid up over a month due to this stupid problem. I'm not really good at electrical problems and not much time. Appreciate your advice, hope all is well! Vinnie

Before you start digging around with the electrics, the first thing you should do is replace the fuse blocks with OEM or the better and less expensive alternative offered by Birdman on this board http://www.birdmanferrari.com/fusebox_upgrade.htm . Also, buy the enlarged electric schematics from Paul308 for $20. It will be the best and most time saving money you can spend and it will make you realize how basic the wiring in these cars is.
