I am opening this one up again, excuse me! I did the new replacement Compressor, Dryer and changed the refrigerant from R12 to R134. Changed the oil too. Worked OK for a year, but this year the performance seems to have dropped off. I can of course re-charge the system and see if it helps. Or the big question is:- can I go back to R12? If as Dr. Tommy C states, the system was designed for R12, maybe I should have stayed with it rather than go for the R134. Does anyone have experience of doing this?

Evacuate the system before recharging. Mine needs it every year but blows very cold once it's done.

It is leeching out of your hoses. You need to replace all your a/c hoses with a barrier style hose compatible with 134 or you will be doing this over and over again for the rest of your life AND if you keep doing this you are going to super load your system with oil to the point that nothing wants to work anymore.

Unfortunately you are too far into this to go back to R12. If I were you I would get 134 hoses, empty the system completely to ensure you are not overfilled with oil and recharge then and only then with the 134.

Bottom line, new correct hoses should resolve your annual issue.
