I have to change my coolant but cannot undo the engine block drain tap and daren’t force it with excess leverage. If I just drain the radiator, does anyone know how much will remain in the system, and need I be concerned about what was left in there?
I was going refill with an OAT 5yr product but decided to stick with traditional Bluecol after reading that OAT is not recommended in older cars.

I did this recently and faced the same problem. I removed the bottom hose from the radiator, and the filler cap in the engine compartment, and jacked up the back of the car. I think all the old coolant drained although cannot be sure. I refilled with Prestone which was on a great offer at Tescos (in the UK). Refilled and bled the system via the top hose on the radiator.

It looks like that Tesco deal is on until the end of the month, £7 for 4L is an absolute bargain. Thanks for the tip, I'll be off to get some tomorrow.

I just drained and flushed my 308GTB in preparation for a water pump and replacement of all coolant hoses. When you talk about the block drain are you referring to the plug under the exhaust header pipe almost on the corner of the block on the water pump side? It is not a petcock - it is a plug. It takes a 17mm wrench to remove it. The same thing is at the radiator unless someone has replaced it at some point. They both should unscrew. My system once fully drained took almost 6 gallons of fluid to refill it.

I, with a more techie friend, drained and flushed my system about 4 years ago. I can't remember the exact details but I do remember we filled the system with some sort of cleaner then forced it all through with an electric tyre pump pumping into the expansion tank (with a suitable seal made of duct tape). Then refilled with deionised water and Mercedes blue coolant. Not the cheapest but apparently the best. Topped up with water wetter.

The amount of muck that came out was amazing, but it probably hadn't been flushed for 30 years!
