Started pulling apart my trunk area, have some rust back there and want to deal with it.
I did some searching for threads on this, but have not seen any.
    Anyone pull the trunk apart?
Also, is the insulation asbestos, or just fiberglass?

Take a look at Newman's 308 Resto thread, the GT4 has similar details.

You'd need to test it, for the 'glass/asbestos question...

    Hello

I have pulled down the whole trunk. It is quite "unique" construction. In the trunk, there is first the carpet, then aluminium, then 10-20 mm heat insulator wool, and then finally the firewall between trunk and enginecompartment (iron). Atleast in my car, there were no any sort of rustproof between the wool and firewall. So, ewerything was in thick rust, and I need to change all rusting metals, that are in contact with the wool.

On the bottom, there is an air channel to prevent heat coming from exhaust, and ofcourse, the insulator wool excist there also. The aluminium panels are held in place with pop-rivets.

I have made the repairpanels from stainles steel, so hopefully, I don't need to do that ever again. My car is US- spec.

I have it all apart now. Will post pics soon.
The number of layers of insulation is ridiculous.
There is even one boxed section with insulation inside!
Found a lot of rust, some surface, some right through.
Fortunately no rust through major frame members. So after the holidays it will be off for soda blast, and then to a fabricator to do the repairs. Then I will coat with POR15 and reassemble.

Any recommendations on replacement insulation? I was thinking rigid foam with the aluminum backing...
