I visited this car which is located in Spokane, Wa last week. It is extremely straight, low mileage and solid. Mileage per documentation and appearance looks to be right at 16k. Car has been repainted and color changed (seats are showing blue under the tan dye), needs a windshield (delaminating on the passenger side edge) and needs a belt service due to time. I realize that the ask price is high. Is this car a something to buy at the right price or just something to stay away from? My purpose is to get a car I can put 3k miles per year, hold for a period of years (10 maybe) then trade up. Has anybody else looked at this car?
    thanks!

If this car was really taken care of as it seems they want you to believe, why did it need a respray and seat dye?

Windshields are almost impossible to find and NOT cheap. As in, not cheap for Ferrari parts and that should tell you something right there (off the top of my head I recall someone on f-chat quoting $5k for one).

Could be a good car, but consider the following:

Repaint is not a major detraction, if done well. The seat redye is. Unless the original color is completely stripped first (apparently it wasn't), you get the problem with flaking and the base color showing. The only solution is to try again (doing it correctly) or just replace the hides (very expensive, $2.5k min).

As mentioned, the windshield can easily cost $3k or more.
Any car that age will need more than a major service...once taken apart and inspected, there will be more, lot's more. Carbs may need rebuilding, water pump rebuilt, distributors may need the advance mechanisms refurbished, anything rubber will be suspect; brake lines, coolant hoses, fuel hoses, fuel filler neck hose, vacuum lines, etc. Brake calipers could be frozen. Does the AC work?

You really want to find the most perfect example possible, as these cars can bleed you of cash fast...that or learn to live with it "as is".

Just start discounting this stuff from the asking price...but I would not spend more than low $20's for this car, if you want to get out with your skin intact.

Call me stupid, but is the 308GTB windshield different from the 308GTS windshield? Seems to me that I remember seeing an ad in Hemmings for GTS windshields for something like $700. Is the GTB glass really that expensive? What's the difference?

I appreciate the input-I will try to find the vin and post it. The color change body/paint wise was done extremely well-I couldn't find a trace of whatever the color was (silver or some type of blue I would imagine) anywhere on the car-I had it on a rack also. The car came from Orange County and the story is that it was faded and had some checking. The hides are already starting to show through. Other than the hides, the only thing left in blue is the grained/vinyl material directly under the seats. The car has been started and moved routinely, is kept in a heated garage and also started from cold easily. The AC blows cold. All hoses were recently changed. Brake fluid has been changed. The windshield has a patch on the passenger side about 8 in tall by 4 in wide *from the edge toward the center of the windshield* I suspect this will continue to spread. Are the windshields available, yet just pricey? or hard to find at all? The reality is that I am looking for a 308 GTB, anything but GTBi, don't mind spending money for a good car, just don't want to get a turkey. Assuming this car is sorted out, runs fine, etc... is the fact that the color has been changed (also assuming the seats and under panels are replaced) a detriment to resale?

    thanks again

Many owners like the Heritage Certificate info to match nice and neat, in regards to color/trim......

Other's won't care, instead going for full ostrich and some gold tooth caps......

Ferrari, when they had the windshield, charged about $1400. A company in Mass. has them for $798 or so. I just got one. Got tired of waiting 8 months for FNA to find me one, so I did my own research and got it in one week.

The difference is reproduction glass, versus factory. The repro stuff may be fine, but I have heard of folks having problems with some of it; easily pits, delaminates, etc. My 328 had a repro windshield...okay for the most part, but the black trim that is silk screened on the inside was flaking off...looked kinda bad.

Even with problems, for the price difference you could replace the window 3 or 4 more times and still be ahead. I'd get the repro.

A group buy for 308 windshields was done a couple of years ago from I believe Ferrari of UK. About 700 a pop. The big cost was getting them shipped. As much cost as the glass itself.

I think I recall a single windshield purchased for around 850 and shipped by itself from the UK came to almost 2k total.

    Whoa........what's with the chairs?

You trying to see the reflection of your butt in them!

What have you put on them to make them so shiny........high gloss clear lacquer???

Whatever, I'd get rid of that gloss before trying to sell the car.

sorry for the scary seat pic, its the only one i have. i had just treated the seats with Meguires Leather Care stuff. the seat covers and carpets are new ( QV herringbone pattern ). installed by the previous owner.
the seats are not shiny now. i applied it with my hands and wiped them down with soft terry towels. when i get back i am buying a 12 cyl something.

If you insist on leather from Ferrari then yes it will cost that much. Maybe more. But if you find a good local leather shop, you should be able to get them recovered for a lot less.

Can you give me a ballpark what I should expect to pay? I have a couple totally terrible Mondial seats and they are just too far gone to save. I either need to dish out to have them re-upholstered, or I need to just throw seat covers over them and forget it!

Veteran's Trim here on Lubbock does all the fine old Rolls, and Jags....

I'd trust them to redo some seats, if it were me..........I agree with Sean there's lots of good leather guys out there!

Thanks for input again...The number of this car is 22103. Is there a database somewhere that would indicate the "real" color of this car?

    thanks
