    I think you are right 360 (please don't admit PP is right :):)), I have said previously in this thread that at the end of the day it will cost what it costs. I love this car and have no intention of selling it. Could I have had a better starting car, sure, but i am attached to this one. Its my first 308, something I dreamed of owning as a kid.

    When its finished I think it will be one of the best in OZ (albeit an import) and I also believe I've got the best bloke in charge of the project.

    I hope PP is wrong, I only said to my lovely wife today that we should really start celebrating our wedding anniversaries and that we should go away for a weekend in the Ferrari. Been married 8 years in this coming December, so heres hoping its ready.

    NO, and I wish you hadn't. :)

    But, 360, in all fairness I do know for a fact that your 308 is immaculate. A full on concourse winner. I remember seeing you sitting next to your car. It was about 6 years ago in port mebourne from memory.

    All I am hoping to do is to experience what the bloke who picked up my car 30 years ago did. Ok I didn't pay 14,000 pound at the time but when my car is restored I should be in the same boat, or car so to speak.

    Took a while but I found the location of you sitting next to your car.

    It was at the Howe Reserve, Port Melbourne. That was when I part owned the Lubrinsky 308GTS.

    I don't even remember it? Meeting me at a concour wouldn't be good, the nonsense always makes me an unhappy camper. I no longer do them for that reason.

    Don't worry about Concour, it will do your head in like nothing else.
    You probably think my cars level is twice the price, it isn't. Happy to discuss in detail if you are game for a reality check :)

    Its been a while, but a few things have started to happen in recent times.

    Can't believe its May already. A belated HNY to all 308 owners. :D

    I'll do 2 posts, the 1st being the body. They started to chemically strip the paint from the body. Man, its amazing what paint can cover. Like most 308's its had a knock in the front. The workmanship on the repairs is absolutely shocking as can be seen from the first picture, and all the other cut outs. All the welds must have been done by the apprentice or a blind person. Sorry, a blind person would have done a better job. :)

    As you all know from the beginning of this threard the car was orignally Gialo Fly. The panel shop was saying that the people who repainted it "re-sale red" actually went back to metal to paint it red as there was no sign of yellow while stripping the paint. The only areas where it was evident is around the window and seals as they weren't removed????? He said he was amazed at the poor workmannship when going that far to prepare a car for painting.

    You can see there is still a lot more paint to strip so it will be interesting to see what else is hidden. I'll keep you all posted. I guess the main thing is its not too bad and we will buy a new nose panel and front wing rear sections as well as any other parts that are in bad shape.

    No bog will be used. We will lead where needed.

    So to post 2. :)

    Not much to show here other than the engine starting to be stripped as well as the shelving showing the rest of the car thats not in the panel shop.

    The only drama we've come accross so far is with the removal of the manifolds. 30 years of electrolosis has them almost welded to the studs. We've got one off, but still need to work on the other. Fortunately the heads came off ok. I believe they can be a real bugger at times. My friends 308 had problems and they ended up breaking a stud and had to have them spark eroded out.

    I have to make the decision whether to put a new set of cams in which can take it up to 300HP. We're obviously going to put the high compression pistons in.

    Again I will keep you up to date with the progress, which I hope will be a little more frequent than to date.

    Just a quick update here and a special thanks to Antman68 for the lead on panels. The parts I ordered from Eddie arrived today. Not bad considering I ordered them on the 21st of May. Thats less than 3 weeks ago and on the other side of the planet.

    The engine and gearbox are fully stripped now and the good news is that theres no major surprises. Its just a normal rebuild now.

    Heres some pics of the new panels that arrived today. Should be a few more photos coming over the next month or so as we are really starting to kick some goals.

    Very nice the new parts.....

    I would definately update to the earlier 308 cams if you don't already have them in your dry sump engine?
    We lost a lot of power in the North American version wet sumps when catalytic exhausts were introduced in 1978, here.
    Maybe measure yours and see what you have, the street version are fine the legendary Lemans P6 version is kind of lumpy, I have heard...

    As to the rear valence I obtained a new relacement for mine from Ferrari UK..it has only one slot in the center with a plastic trim surround and the bottom is smooth without the single exhaust cut out, then a 4 tip ANSA unit completes the look.
    The ANSA sport exhaust was a common dealer installed item back in the day..I even have a pattern to remake the trim shroud if you need one...

    Here's my yellow car for motivation.......we cannot use lead here anymore, and as you note you have to remove all trim to avoid damage from the heat of the process.....man you are deep into it my friend....hat's off!

    Also examine the rain gutter right behind those new parts, at the front of the hood, the two tiny weep holes draining often clog with debris and it sandwiches to the pieces you are replacing, if you don't have rust forming there, in an early steel car, you are dealing with a pampered example! LOL!

    my heads and manifolds just slipped straight off. must be the difference between a well maintained car and one that isn't.

    looks like a long slow process. esp if staff keep leaving.

    Yes 30 years of electrolisis has taken its toll on one of the manifolds. I don't know if they have been removed before or not. Graham Vincient used to maintain the car for the old owner from 1986 to 2003 when I bought it. The records I have don't indicate they were ever removed. I don't have any records for its first 8 years of life.

    Firstly to my fellow 308 owners residing in the good old US of A. I hope you all have a safe and happy Independence Day. :D

    Well yet another month passes by in a flash. There has been some progress on my car so time for an update. These first set of pics just show some of the cancer being removed from the car. As seen in previous posts there was not only the odd bit of rust but some very bad workmanship/repairs which has also been removed.

    I was going to repair the door skins but I am now thinking of replacing them. I have sent a PM to Newman to see who supplied his.

    On the mechanical side of the project, both the engine and gearbox are now fully stripped. The new pistions are in the country and they will be sent off shortly with the block to be machined and honed to macth. All the new bearings for the gearbox are in as well. No photos for this part of the project yet, but, hope to post some in the coming weeks.

    Enough text for now. Heres some pics of the cancer removal.

    The front end was a real mess as see before (I'll put 1 pic in as a reminder). It was a good example of bad workmanship. The following pics just show the front has been cut off. Also you will see one of the new panels sitting in place. There is a bit of work to be done to get it all to fit.

    There are also a couple of pics showing the repair at the back, again fixing poor workmanship.

    You will note with all the work being done that no "BOG" is being used. As per the original construction, everything is leaded.

    Its called wiping metal.
    Have helped build 6 vintage Alvis bodies over the years. Have done a bit of that.
    All done at the local tech college.
    Who have you entrusted the work to? Am new to these cars and keen to understand which shops are which.
    Hope they pick up the pace for you. Must be frustrating waiting.

    remind me not to touch my car. i wouldn't be pleased to see that sort of corrosrion or poor workmanship on it. had it been bingled or were these repairs poor attempts to remove rust in the past?

    I am not sure of the reason for the repairs. The front repair I am assuming was a repair to a small bingle. My car is ex UK, so I am sure most of the little repairs are for rust. UK cars are known for it even though my car was only there for its first 8 years of life. If you look at the early photos in this thread you will see the car stripped sitting there nice and shiny. Almost looked like it had just come out of the spray booth. As I said its amazing what paint covers!!!!

    I sincerely hope your car isn't like mine should you choose to restroe it at some point. It apperas to be in good nick so there is no need for you to repaint it. As I say I only found out when the paint was removed.

    i'll be turning a blind eye, i can assure you. it's just a hack car for me, so i won't be spending anything more than my usual high standard of routine maintenance.
