I attended the LA Concours @ the Rose Bowl this last weekend (my 308 was not entered or displayed,..yet). I spent alot of time with 308 owners and judges pouring over details on the 308's entered, and found out some new facts about what is considered "original". I have a 85 Swiss spec Euro, and have known for some time about many Swiss specific differences, but on the engine compartment firewall insulation I am now stumped. The U.S. cars, and (according to judges I asked), the Euros also, have an aluminum sheet over the firewall insulation, and a sheet aluminum brake-bent sheild above the fuel crossover tube. My car has neither, but looks like pictures I have seen of early GTSI cars, and later 328's.
I know this is a nit picky little detail, but I would like to have It correct on my car. This area needs to be restored anyway (see photo). I am bringing it to the forum in hopes of getting a definite answer, Any 100 point Swiss spec car owners want to post pics?
Whadda you guys say about this?

    Thanks Michael!
The judges must be wrong. I'de like to get some more input though before I get the airbrush fired up to paint it. Do you have soft 3/4" thick raw foam on the firewall below the fuel crossover? And what color do you think is original,
    aluminum silver ?

    Louis,

What you're describing is present only on the European fiberglass GTBs:

My 1988.5 car definitely had the aluminum firewall shield. It was an insulated board with an aluminum sheet formed over it.

It's hard to see (since I wasn't specifically aiming for it) but you can see the reflection off of it running near the top of the engine compartment all the way across. I took mine off and cleaned it a bit during my belt service.

    Hope this sheds some light.

where'd you get that oil filter cover? Is it more for dress up or to act as an insulator?

    JWISE,
Thanks. This helps alot and explains why the thick insulation foam that covers my firewall (the entire fire wall) has a melted/heat damaged area right where that sheild SHOULD be, to protect it from the unsheilded euro headers. I ain't got one of those. What is your vin #, if I might ask. It does not look like your car ever had the thick exposed foam like mine. Otherwise the upper area looks identical on both our cars.

PS- Your motor seems to be missing slightly.

Both. I've used these on almost every 911 I've owned, for far more practical reasons, but I like the aesthetic as well. Owning Porsches will give you a new appreciation of heat dissipation, I promise. I own a mid engine boat and have one for it as well.

After I installed this on my 328 though, the thing would get wicked hot to the touch, so I felt like it was doing its job, creating more surface area for heat to find it way elsewhere.

As a side note, I'm looking for a 328 again, hopefully in blue or silver this time around. If anyone knows of one just email me.

I have a 1989 328, that is also Swiss. It has the same material as your car on the firewall and has something similar on the engine cover (something I have seen on a TR of approximately the same vintage).

    Thanks,
Yes, I have the same foam insulation on the engine bonnet, Swiss only.
Do you have the aluminum header shield to protect the firewall foam?
    Thanks for the info,
    -Luigi

No problem. I see no indication that I'm missing any foam, but I have only had the car three years. I've been told it's a swiss/german spec car by a Ferrari tech at Boston Sports Car in Mass., so I assume he would know.
What other characteristics of a swiss car are you aware of? Mine has the mesh over the side intakes, etc.

    Car # is 48305.

    Jwise,
The intake screens are specific to German 308's only.

Here is what I know about Swiss Euro 308's:

-different gearbox, closer ratio 2nd thru 5th, lower 1st, taller final drive.
(see Kieth Bluemel's book "original Ferrari V8") Love mine, great for canyon
    and mountain twistys.
-sound insulation on engine bonnet, inner wheel wells and (apparently) the
    firewall.
-Swiss specific quieter exhaust muffler system (mine weighs about 100 lbs)
-Swiss specific horn tone, different pitch.
-Swiss specific air duct between air box and exterior scoop (mine has a sort
    of "muffler" bump thing)
-Swiss cars were only available delivered with Michelin TRX 390 metric tires
and wheels (less road noise I think)
-No rear fog light option as delivered from factory
-No deep air front dam as delivered from factory

Consult your parts manual if you have one, or get a ebay cd version. There are many many small parts that are CH only (the code for swiss spec )

It seems to be all about noise generated.
"and once again, the Swiss remain "Quietly" neutral"

    Luigi-
Great information! I have none of those visible swiss characteristics, so my car must be german. Where did you dig this up? Any info on german QV's?

    Thanks again-

Your very welcome. I have gotten most information from books, other owners and mechanics. Also f-chat. The original parts manual, if you study it close, has a ton of spec specific info. The 308 QV register is a cool website and Wade Nunez who runs it is a good guy. Kieth Bluemel's book "original ferrari V8" is a must have for 308/328/Mondial owners, tons of info. The factory site will give you alot of info on your car if you e-mail (or snailmail) them (registered owners).

I have no further knowledge of German spec stuff.

    Best regards,
    -Lou

PS- if you decode you entire vin it will tell you alot of info incl country of delivery. Do a search on "vin decode" here or on google.
