I removed my 84's gearbox cover in order to change the gasket. When I dropped the cover, I found two springs, and three ball bearings laying on the bottom (inside of the cover).

The car worked fine when I parked it. Any ideas what I should do?

The only reason why I even found them was they did not drain into my oil container because they were laying in an indentation in the gearbox pan. Otherwise, I would have never even known as they would have drained into my container and would have then been discarded when I dump the oil at the local service station.

Look in your parts manual for a match.

You should have a total of 3 balls, 3 springs and 1 aluminum plug. If you don't have all of them you are in a bit of trouble. Some of the parts may still be in the transmission case. If you look at the gasket sealing surface of the trans case you will see three holes on the left side, one being a little larger than the other two. This is where all the parts go. They are the detent pieces for the shifting rails. If you have a slim magnet that will fit in the holes try to fish out any remaining parts. Once you have found or replaced them and are ready to reinstall the pan, fill the holes with grease and first push one ball into each hole followed by one spring in each hole. Then into the large hole push in the aluminum plug, wipe off the excess grease that oozed out and install the pan. Your trans needs all of them to work properly so find them or get replacements before proceding.

Thank you Rifledriver, I nearly had breakdown when I saw those parts in the pan. Seems pretty straightforward. I have the spare parts book, but it is not a service manual and doesn't indicate how things go together or come apart, it just has exploded diagrams and part numbers. So I wasn't sure what was going on with this

    Thanks again,
    Phil
