Motor Cars International has a '89 Ferrari Mondial t listed for $49,500. It had it's 30,000 "major" service done @ a Ferrari dealership here in illinois. The total was over $14,000!

    http://www.motorcars-intl.com/vehicle_details.aspx?id=692&CAR=Ferrari-Mondial-T-Cab

I got a e-mail from the seller inquiring on the service breakdown. The service records (from Continental Autosports) had 63 hours labor @ $135.00/hr. = $8,505.00 in labor costs alone. parts were $5,330.89 Looking over the invoice, there wasn't anything else done other than the 30K engine out major service. That's 1/3 of the asking price of the car...

Any Mondial owners out there? I need to restore my dream of Ferrari ownership... :(

    Thanks.

    Joe

Well, I need to look over my rates carefully, but, the last one out of here was the labor figure quoted (but that was the invoice GROSS including parts!!)

63 hours for the service only? Wow

I was looking at a 89 t Coupe that basically needed a restoration. Even though I was allotting about $15k for parts alone the dealer wouldn't price the car realistically. So I had to pass :(

I hear prices quoted all the time for a major service and come to find out in the end it also included a new clutch, new brakes, new hoses, new tires etc, etc.

Strictly speaking none of that is part of a major.

I had my Mondi T serviced with the full engine out 30k done under two years ago in Florida. It was about 8K TOTAL labor and parts. The car ws in good condition to begin with but wanted to have it done as a preventative measure. From what I gather 8k is about an average price for this service on a car in good condition. But as always when the engine is out..its a good time to do more things and maybe the owner approved more stuff as the shop offerred to do it. 14k seems a little high for "just" a 30 k service. I'd bet there was more done at that time (I'd hope.)

$14K service, 14K mileage. Not bad, a dollar a mile. And people say Ferrari are expensive.

Four years ago. Fantastic job for the low, low cost of $6500.00. They even changed the air in the tires......
And people say the dealer is expensive, or is it that i have a lowly 3.2?

3.2 is a great car and costs much less to service.

Ferrari of San Diego quoted me $9,100 for a major on a 328. I ended up having it done at Bobileff's, by the book, for quite a bit less. Given that the Mondial t is a more complicated car and requires engine removal, $14,220 is probably full retail at an authorized dealer.

I believe ownership costs on the Mondial QV and 3.2 would be more reasonable, by Ferrari standards.

I'm actually surprised the dealer got the work after quoting $14K. Especially in the Chicago area, it seems like there would be better choices for servicing a 19-year old Ferrari.

I'll say thing, it's a nice looking cuss. The interior is in better than normal shape, and the exterior looks good.

But that much on a major cannot be just normal....I'll bet the A/C got a fixing, some other 'issues' etc. like a top latch here, etc.

Top latches dont need to cost $450.00 each.
I offer the toggles for the low, low cost of $85.00 each and that dont break!
    And it you act now.....

A lot of thought went into which model Mondial was the one for me. I am really glad I ended up with a 3.2.
I drove a few "t's" before buying and although they have a bit more power and power steering, I like the 3.2 much more. Personal opinion I guess.

That's a very nice looking t Cab. Now they have to throw into the deal, a pair of Ron's toggles and a Spider Top from Ricambi - - and that baby looks good to go:)

As for that dollar amount for the 30k service, loads of additional needed services must have been performed along with the basic major - -

    Cheers, Hank

Spot on. The cost and work performed on a 30K service can be as different as night and day.

I know an independant Ferrari shop owner that was asked by a 348 owner his price for it's 30K service. Then the customer went to the local Ferrari dealership and got their price. The dealership was a few thousand cheaper, so he took it there without knowing the difference in what they were actually going to do in the 30K service (which turned out to be a lot less than the independent was including).

To make a long story short, when he received his car back from the dealership, it ran like *****. After weeks of getting little or no action from them, took it back to the independant to have it looked at.

Without knowing all the details, it ended up costing the customer many thousands more than it would have originally cost from the independant.

Bottom line, get the details about the service in advance, and what they are going to include or not include.

I did my own 30K service on my 348 including the hill tentioners and a new water pump but didn't change the clutch while it was out. 2 months later 3 fingers broke off the pressure plate so I had to replace the dual disk clutch/pp assembly. Ya learn the hard way sometimes, even though the clutch was an easy removal and reassembly on my car, the water pump or tentioner bearings aren't and aren't always included in some shops 30K service.

The 'dealer' should have had its feet held to the fire. No reason to correct an anthorized dealership's fault by doing another major...now the other way around, well, that's a horse of a different color.
