As I await the arrival of the 308 GT4 I got off eBay, I’ve been doing a lot of reading and research getting ready for the work I’ll need to do. While there are a few repairs needed, the first thing I have to tackle is the 30K service. In researching the 30K service I’m trying to find the best source for the necessary parts. Reading about various part suppliers has been helpful. I was hoping to buy a service kit with all the necessary items. However, I’ve seen some discrepancies in price and parts list and need some help sorting it out. I’m sure some of my confusion is due to inexperience with the 308 but hopefully that will be a passing thing ;-) Here’s what I’ve found so far and I’d like to know what other owners buy, how they buy their service kit parts and anything to watch out for in the purchase. All kits below are supposed to be for 308/2V carbureted .

Ferrparts on eBay, 30 K service kit - $850 plus free shipping
Ferrari 308 2 Valve Carburetor 30K Service Kit | eBay . I called them and confirmed this is the same kit they have on their two websites for $977. Why so much less on eBay, no idea.
    http://www.ferrparts.com/3082v.php and Ferrari 308 2 Valve Service Kit - 30K

    T. Rutlands on eBay, 30 K service kit, - $850 plus $15 shipping
New Major Service Kit for All Ferrari 308 1974 1979 T Rutlands Ferrari Parts | eBay
I couldn’t find this kit listed on their website but maybe I didn’t look in the right place.

Ricambi America – 30K service kit - $1,265 plus shipping? Doesn’t include spark plugs, $85 for NGK Iridium, does include Hill Engineering tensioner bearings.
    308 GTS/GTB 30K Service Kit : Ricambi America

I went so far as to make an Excel worksheet trying to line up the item description and quantities to make sure they all include the same thing. They don’t it seems and that’s where my lack of experience can’t match up one vendors description of ‘2 gaskets’ to another vendor’s description. The Ricambi kit seems much more expensive even with the Hill bearings. Seems like I could still piece that kit together and get Hill bearings all at a lower cost. Also the spark plugs could be had elsewhere for a lot less (Rockauto.com).

I’d appreciate any guidance on other places/ways to buy the 30K service items or if you have good/bad experience with any of these three vendors. I’ll try and attach my Excel doc if the forum allows it. Also here’s a screenshot of the spreadsheet.

The knowledge in the forums has been great and I'm trying to only post after searching the forums and still finding myself with questions. I may have a small slew of these over the coming weeks/year.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Russ,
Nice to see you're doing your homework and anticipating a service which is probably overdue.
But if you keep going on your excel spreadsheet, in just a few years you might have the nicest $100K GT4 on the planet!
Ha! Just kidding. But I would recommend getting the car and evaluating it in person. Heck, once it's in your garage, you may give up all hope and sell it to me for .50 on the dollar!
Just sayin', don't be too eager to spend a bunch of $ on parts. Trust me, you'll have plenty of opportunity for that. Try all the fluids first, test drive it and get a feel for what you have before you take it all apart, because once you do, well, one thing leads to another.....
Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks guys. The best guess I have on the last 30K service was maybe late 2006 early 2007. The previous owner passed and didn't keep good written records. So while it doesn't have much mileage on it since then, it does have the age. I just have to err on the side of since I don't know, better to just do the full service.

Believe me, I don't want to buy more parts than I have to but I do know the 30K has to happen. I also agree that one thing will lead to another, water pump inspection/decision as just one example.

Does anyone use these 30K kits or do you just assemble the parts you want?
    Thanks,
    Russell

One thing you may or may not want to be 100 % clear on is whether all the parts are genuine OEM ie with the horse on the box and the six digit code showing - there's lots of discussion about how critical this is so its your call but it might just explain some of the price differences

As to buying the kit my observation is the three vendors right now know a bunch more than you about what you should need for the work to be performed and as such it probably makes sense to take their suggestions

That's where the confusion starts as EACH vendor seems to have a little different kit. Thus my question to the group as to whether ANYONE uses these kits.

    Thanks,
    Russell

    But regret it.
I did not order a "kit" per se when I did mine, I just started ordering parts...
I would recommend getting everything from Superformance except the valve cover gaskets. Theirs are not very good (or at least the ones I got were not).
Everything else was good quality and reasonable prices.
Dont forget the Hill Engineering belt tensioners, and read the boards for how to do the work. And when I order the parts Monday I have them by Thursday or Friday (Western New York).
Take your time and have fun. Most interesting thing about working on this car is that whatever you are working on - if you can get both hands on it, you can't see it - and conversely if you can see it you can only get one hand on it!

Back to cost tracking: now that I have turned a trunk cleanout / rebuild / rusted metal replacement into a bare metal respray I will no longer be adding up costs...
    Cough...Cough...Cough...
