No problem Bob - I like the info you posted - That's what it's all about - Just trying to help owners/future owners.

Tell me more about Eugenio - Did I see that right - Is he doing the work out of his home's garage?

    thanks

Slag, I live in Dallas closer to the other guy I mentioned in the 10th post here... Shadetree Enginetrics. The guy is meticulous and goes beyond the call. This is why people ship their cars to have him do the work. His shop is out in the "country" so his overhead is cheap... accordingly his prices are great!

Re Eugenio, I don't know him. All I know is that there are a bunch of Southern California F-Chatters who really, really praise his work. I'm not sure of his location... not sure it really matters either. When someone tells me about an outstanding F-tech who has reasonable prices, my ears perk up. Maybe some of the SoCal guys can chime in?

Here's one of many examples (this is the old site so start at the bottom and work up):

Thanks for the info Bob - Very useful! I never even thought of shipping my car out for service!

I'll have to ask around if anyone has used Eugenio - He sounds like a good guy. If he works out of his home, I can see how he keeps his costs down! Here is a pic of his garage :

This has been very educational, I've spent more money than I thought after throwing it together. I can see why the previous owner didn't keep it long. He spent $2,500 in 3 months and many of the items he got screwed. I use to get my BMW serviced at Overseas and they were great, but it looks this time they screwed this guy in the Ferrari. All that money for plugs and injectors, then FoD just replaced them and probably fixed the car right just 300 miles later.

Looking through all my items I don't have anything I got screwed on. I was spending $200+ several times to get the A/C refilled(complete leak) when I should of just got a new compressor in the first place which was only around $200. I've had to have the waterpump rebuilt 3 times, but Norwoods only charged me the first time and actually put a new one in this last time, because after all those failures there may have just been something faulty with my casing.

I've started doing my own oil and brakes the past year. It's fun, it's easy, and I'll save about $400-500 a year because of it.

I'll be taking it in in a couple months to get the entire fuel/air system gone over. I'm sure it will be expensive. I will also need a 15k soon. Although I'm really thinking about putting the car up for a couple years and slowly rebuild the engine and restore parts of it. I want to do that when I can afford to, I just don't know when that will be. I don't want to do that until I get close to my 330 2+2 or something similar so at least I have one Ferrari for the street. I have also thought about getting a neglected 308 GTB to rebuild/restore, instead of the 328 because the 328's engine is perfectly fine.

Whatever I do it will be fun. I hope to never sell a Ferrari, I plan on having this 328 forever.

Not just an inspiration, I liked Steve's format enough that I copied the html (with his permission) to track my Lotus Esprit S4s service costs.

Those costs aren't bad at all, but probably because it's a newer Lotus. My friend with a 1988 has spent about $15k in the past 2-3 years and the car is only worth about $18k.

Eugenio's website says that his shop is in the San Gabriel Valley. I'm not sure where that is in relation to you though.

Just to help with additional info here :

Eugenio did the 30k on my F355 2 years ago and I have had zero problems since. It needed a 30k plus some additional work. I have raced the car 4 times at both Willow Springs and California Speedway and the car performed great. Personally I feel he does meticulous work, that's just my personal opinion. And yes, he did the work in one of his garages, he has two now. Because of this he has little expense so he can afford to charge less.

Just my 2 cents for anyone needing service.

To bring this thread back up. Norwoods did a 30k right when I bought the 328 in 9/00. Cost was about $3,000 total for the 30k stuff. Car was due a 15k this year, but with some minor seal leaks I decided to do the full 30k. Norwoods just finished today and total for the 30k was about $4,000. Forgot what the labor rate was back in 2000, but labor rate is now $91 and they charge a flat 32 hours for it.

I still think Norwoods is a great place, they stand behind their work 100% and usually do a quality job the first time. Now that they've become popular (because of FerrariChat.com? :)) I don't think they're the absolute value they use to be. Shadetree would probably save a little more than a thousand, but Norwoods has always been great to use and they're a FerrariChat.com sponsor! :)

Now I had a bunch of little stuff that took the bill up to $6,480 total. That hurts, but the car is really in great shape now, even little stuff I shouldn't have worried about. The A/C continues to be a frustration. Since I've owned the car the A/C has been a struggle. They put over $500 worth of work into it this time and I've spent over $2,000 the past 4 years, yet the problem always returns. It will work 3+ months and then go dead, usually in winter when not in use. I understand Norwoods problem a little, because when it runs dry, there isn't much die to troubleshoot. But dang it, after more than $2,000 I should have an A/C that works for more than 3 months at a time.

Great to have the car back!

As an example as how things differ regionally as was referred to earlier in this post you quoted Norwoods at 32 hours labor (very fair # for complete job). With California costs of doing business this would alone be from $3200 to $4000 just in labor. I also know of many areas in the country with much lower overhead costs that have equal labor charges.

Here are the breakdowns, let me know what you think, when you break everything down like this it makes sense (cents). Man everything adds up quick! Respect your mechanic, most are just trying to make a buck like the rest of us and charge fairly for a quality job.

    30k ($1,167.78 parts + $2,912.00): $4,079.78
    A/C ($328.49 parts + $136.5 labor): $464.99
    Rebuilt brake booster ($246.68 parts + $136.50 labor): $383.38
General troubleshooting from a list I provided: $204.75
    Electrical repairs: $432.25
    Drive seat bolt problem: $136.50
Degrease and power wash underside of engine: $136.50
Complete Zaino Detail (Annual w/engine and under front hood): $220
    Gasoline: $15
    Shipping: $44.25
    5% Shop Supplies: $204.75
    8.25% sales tax: $160.69
    ---
    Grand Total: $6,482.64

Looks like a good deal to me, unless of course you want the guy from Burger King with no insurances of any kind fixing it in his back yard. Then it is a little high.
