Rod bolts were never a problem but rods were. There was a built in stress riser in the big end near the rod bolt boss on the early rods. Ferrari redesigned them and suggested replacement of the early style when we saw them. I remember it from a school I attended years ago. Might be a TSB on the subject.

On the topic of the threads in the link.
Ferrari denied the 80/81/82 cars had an oil burning problem. You guys weren't around back then because to the guys that were I would be hearing their laughter from here.

Ferrari denied there was a manifold problem on the 355. We know otherwise.

Ferrari denied there was a valve guide issue despite the fact they redesigned them.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Such a small percentage of the fleet gets any mileage put on it naturally a very small percentage has any trouble within the first few years. We are still seeing on a regular basis bad valve guides on 355s without too many miles.

If I had one and the engine was out I would look to see if it had bronze guides. If it did and I was planning on keeping the car a long time I would get it over with. The exhaust valves will need replacement due to face wear and they cannot really be refaced. The intake valves MIGHT be saved but they are not very good quality. While I was ordering new exhaust valves from Manley or Ferrera I would get a set of those too. They are a very small percentage of the overall job.

    Rifledriver (Brian C),

I know there's been a whole thread on the reappearance of your wisdom in the general forum, but I want to thank you again here in this forum for your insight and expertise on matters such as this. The more we all know, the better armed we are for the miscellaneous issues that come up with these cars. Thanks.

Reg, glad to hear your car is soon to be back in your hands and on the road. Enjoy it in good health!

    John

Brian, why would you recommend changing valve guides that have not failed? If you do the valves at this time there is no gain over leaving the guides in place until they fail IF they ever fail.

I only suggested it if you were planning on keeping the car a long time. The bronze guides Ferrari used were junk. While it is true some are still in use and working well it does not change the fact the a very high percentage have failed and a very high percentage will fail prematurely. Taking the motor out is a big expense. I would avoid having to do it again. But then I change my timing belts on schedule and many here who seem to know better say that is stupid too.
