Did a search, found no conclusive answer. I know 80s vintage Volvo valve shims cross over to 2V 308 engines. My 328 is in the shop and they need a couple valve shims. Can anybody here advise of a crossover, Volvo or otherwise, for the 328 4V engines? I'm trying to speedily get him the shims locally, as otherwise he's waiting on a shipment. Thanks, Greg 87 328 GTB
If the 328 shims are identical to 308, then you can simply use Fiat SOHC or DOHC shims (vintage Lampredi engine Fiats, or Yugo). I have hundreds in my Fiat X1/9 kit.
I know that 308 2V shims cross over to Volvo, i just don't know if 308 2V shims are the same as 308/328 4V shims. Not sure where i could find older Fiat parts in Houston. ?? Greg Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2
I just looked on superformance.. QV cam followers are smaller than the 2V, so I guess only the 2V heads use the Fiat type shims.
2V shims cross over to Volvo, BMW, Fiat and perhaps other brands. The 4V shims probably do as well. Just get the correct diameter (and thinkness of course). The 4V shims are of smaller diameter than the 2V shims and more plentiful from my experience. I have a 2V. Just get a set of good calipers and measure one that comes out of your car as I do not want to pull something outta my butt and lie. MEASURE the shims you intend to put in your car. The printed measurment on each, if there is one, is often VERY Wrong. Even when new. I measured well in excess of 100+ to get the 11 shims I needed/wanted.
GT Car Parts in Arizona had the best price on shims to fit my 328. I don't believe there is any cross-over with Volvo or Fiat cars. Sean
For 2V shims (I have no idea if they are the same as 4V but I doubt it), ring up Auto Ricambi, LLC - Fiat 124 Spider Specialists And they are (somewhere) in TX. Csaba and Ramzi are two of the nicest, most honest and knowledgeable guys in the world of Fiats (and general Italian cars). Jonathan Denver, CO
Looking for the same stuff for my 456. Some 29mm shims. All i could find is thin motocycle ones. But I am after 3.4 to 3.9mm thick. Apart from outrageous Ferrari dealer prices, any idea where to procure them? In addition, anyone tried to gring a couple of 0.1mm off some of your existing shims?
29mm Valve Adjustment Shim Kits For 3.5 & up, I have lots of used ones drop me PM or email to [email protected] grinding down the shim is possible but not recommended as there is a very slight crown ground into them, something around a 30" radius.
When I did the valve adjustments on my '78 308, 2V car, I remember that the shims are a direct cross-over to the Volvo 240 engine of the same period. I bought a kit with Volvo shims on line for the cost of one "Ferrari" shim, and they fit and worked perfectly. I don't know if they are the same as the 4V shims, but they were the perfect solution for the 2V car.
The 4V shims are a smaller in diameter than for the 2V. BMW shims from the old M3 IIRC (or M5) will also fit perfectly. That is where I found many for my 2V. Some Fiat (fancy that) shims will fit too. Finding the correct thickness is the REAL problem. If you will except "good enough" the issue is not too severe. If you want a "darn good fit" to get the most out of the motor one way or another, then you are gunna have some big challenges finding them. I went thru at least 100 maybe even 200 using a manual micrometer on each one three times each, looking for the 11 shims I wanted, to replace the ones that were in the motor and completely out of spec. Even brand new shims are often NOT the thickness printed on them. Sometimes not even close + AND - , so measure them all carefully.
Hello Sir!!!! We just fitted the guides you shipped me for the 456. Hard work but now done. Good stuff you sent to me. Pictures are 456M - Changement Des Guides De Soupape - Page 7 - Ferrari 456 - 550 Maranello - 575 M - Ferrarista - Ferrari Owners Only And installed in the head here 456M - Changement Des Guides De Soupape - Page 14 - Ferrari 456 - 550 Maranello - 575 M - Ferrarista - Ferrari Owners Only Now I need the correct shims
on the 4v I decided to move the builds I'm doing over to shim under. Now I use lighter buckets and lash caps (1/2 the weight of oem), a bit more expensive out of the gate but easier and cheaper down the road getting lash caps in the needed thickness.
Yep - the SOHC/DOHC Fiat engines were designed by Lampredi - same as the 308 engine. Corporate "parts bin", 308 was a Fiat era Ferrari
