Out of curiosity - has anyone actually seen any cooling improvement in the cabin by JUST changing a properly working York to a Sanden? I personally don't believe the Sanden will make any improvement but I have never actually seen an objective test with any data re this.

I realize that the Sanden is smoother and takes less power to drive but in the scheme of things, as far as ac performance is concerned, I'd like to see some data that actually shows better cooling of the cabin Sanden vs York. Taking more/less power is not really an issue if you are just cruising along. If you want all the HP the engine can deliver you are going to shut off the ac anyway and in that case they are both just freewheeling pulleys.

Along those lines - I have never noticed if the 3x8s have a WOT cutoff for the ac compressor. Many cars had (maybe still have?) that which meant if you went to WOT, the compressor automatically disengaged.

    Maurice,
The rub hole was on the bottom of the smaller hose where it came over the gas tank. Figures. I'll wrap the new hoses with protection at the rub locations.

I'm running new hoses and fittings this weekend with the help of local AC guru Steve Carr.

Having a heck of a time finding the shorter Gates 11M875 belt. I think I've found a cross-reference part at NAPA. I'll post the part# here if it fits. It will need to be 2" shorter than stock (11M925) to work. (50mm is 1.96")

Is JUST a Sanden going to run cooler than the York? No idea, but my York bit the dust and I'm wanting to go 21st century wherever I can.

I would agree to go with the Sanden IF it cools as well or better than the York and IF the York is broken. OTOH, you can buy a new York for as low as $159 and there is none of the fitting issues - it just bolts back on. That's why I'm wondering about any actual difference in cooling performance. If there's none, I can't really see any benefit at all when the cost and fitting problems are figured in.

As far as moving into the 21st century...we have the absolutely wrong cars for that! :)

Find a local supplier for the belts. Local auto parts stores don't carry them b/c they are industrial v-belts, not auto belts

    http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochure=2790&location_id=3292

Click "find a distributor". The 11M comes in many sizes. The OEM is 11M825 or something. "M" = Metric, 11 = 11mm wide.

The 2nd number is the length, so the one listed is 825mm long.

I THINK they come in 25mm incriments. So measure what you've got and find a distributor near you and order one. It's going to take at least a day to get it in so you may want to get Steve to come another weekend. Also, to replace the hoses you need to remove the gas tank. To start the car, you'll need to put it back in....so don't plan on this all happening in one day. Unless you plan on a really LONG day. You might have to get Steve to come back more than once.

Might want to order Scuderia Rampart fuel cross over hoses since you'll be taking out the gas tank.

    Sean,
Thanks, found the belt at NAPA, Steve is bringing several over tomorrow night as well, to make sure we have the right one. First visit is a reconnaissance mission to see what we need. We'll probably do the install Sunday PM.

I already have the right-side tank out. Ready to roll. Probably going to just have him create the lines, as I might not want to button everything up just yet to start the car. I've got all coolant and gas drained, installed new crossover pipe rubber today (upper and lower), new vent rubber on top, new tank to pump hose, etc. Finished the cambelts/tensioners last week. That was the easy part!!! I still need to install the fuel filter and fuel accumulator.

By the way, who the hell made the decision to mount the 328 fuel filter on the firewall where you can't reach it???? :) For this reason, I may not be ready to start the car for Steve.

I can vacuum and charge with refrigerant myself, I mainly need Steve to help with the hoses.

    I'll keep you guys posted.

Forgot to mention I've also got the compressor hung loosely so ready to install the belt and tighten it up. Then we can accurately create the hoses and fittings.

    Hi Guys
I have just bought a York compressor to replace my missing unit in my 1978 308 GT4. The one I bought has a part number of R209R - 16784, I apparently came off a Mustang. If I read these posts correctly this is a bigger unit than the OEM (R206R).

I have no brackets in the car but I do have the AC pipes running into the engine compartment and all the rest of the AC under the front and dash.

Does anyone have any advice please? It looks identical to pictures of the original. Any tips for brackets/mounts and tensioner please?
    Thanks in advance..
    Nick

    Nick, if it will fit you will need the upper and lower mounting brackets. These are available and in fact plenty on ebay;

If the unit is used then you will likely want it gone over and re-sealed and fresh lubricant. Also you will need the clutch/pulley and that might turn into a treasure hunt. Good luck.
    Found one maybe?

I have a used compressor w/pulley so PM me if you get frustrated, comes with the mounts (around here somewhere)

    Hi Robert
Thank you :) I know about Ferrparts and their bits, I was hoping to get some cheaper :(
The unit is used, and has a pulley, that's all i know about it. I might strip it down and give it a going over. The clutch in the ebay picture looks pretty like the one i already have!
