I have a 1989 328 w/ABS. For about two years, the ABS light on the dash has been on with no solution, but I learned to live with it. Today, I drove it and the light was off. Hurray, self-healing ABS. After an hour, it started blinking, along with a faint "BRAKE FAILURE" light blinking in unison.

    - Major done one month ago
    - The fluid level is correct
    - I disconnected the battery to try to reset with no luck
    - It blinks when the engine is one or the key turned on with the engine off
    - Steady blink, on off on off, no pattern or code
    - I pump the brakes a dozen times, and it goes off for 10 seconds, then starts again
    - No change in feel of the brakes

I would love to solve it, or at least get back to light steady on without "BRAKE FAILURE" light faintly flashing.

    Thanks.

Mule, have you tried accessing the ABS codes. Easy on a 328 or 348. Repair may be difficult but the codes are easily read.
The following is the procedure for the 348 from my poor memory
Remove luggage compartment liner. Pain in the butt on a 348!
On the right/ passenger side you will see the ABS electronic system assembly. A series of relays and fuses.
1 of the fuse receptacles is empty.
    Install a 10-amp fuse.
Turn on the ignition, do not start.
Count the number of ABS light flashes
Check code matrix in workshop manual for indicated problem.
The ABS light will not reset itself if the battery is disconnected. Resets at a certain speed after the problem is diagnosed and corrected, if I recall correctly.
All that said my 348 ABS light is still on. Final troubleshooting is next on my fix it list!
    Good Luck!

Thanks for the info John. No codes, though. Which is why it is weird. Every test and diagnostic says there is no problem. The ABS light itself for two years, and now the blinking accompanied by the brake failure light, but still no book answer.

I have a couple guys researching it today, and may take it in next week. Like I said, if I could at least get back to not blinking, no brake failure light, I could live with it.

I think I know what the blinking means...it's burning out. Today, no light, so I though great. But then I though too good to be true. Turned the key to check, and no light at all, so it's out.

I am going to replace the bulb, and see where I am from there. I expect the light will be steady on as before. If it is on, I am stumped; if it is blinking again, I am double stumped.

Might be related to the other thread on the 308 brake failure light.
