Here is the timeline of my problem that began today on my first drive after having put my 328 away for the winter:

    1. Car runs fine for 25 miles then the alt. light comes on showing the batt. is not charging. I pull over and raise the engine cover. I also look down and in back of the car on the road is the alternator belt still in fairly good shape and a large piece of flat rubber that looks as if it hade been glued on something.

    2. Decide to drive home hoping the battery holds up.

    3. After about 15 miles the temp guage begins to rise. At about 200 degrees I pull into a gas station and call for a tow truck.

    4. I get home and pull of the right rear tire and the shroud. I find that the WP belt is off the pulley and although not broken it is in bad shape.

    5. I also note that there seems to have been a place on the top of the pass. side gas tank where the rubber piece might have been glued perhaps as protection against the top of the gas tank rubbing against the air intake duct. Any thoughts on this?

    6. Problem might have been caused by the rubber piece coming lose and getting caught up in the alternator and WP belts causing the problem. Any thoughts on this.

7.Searched the archives and cannot find a NAPA or Gated cross reference to a WP belt. There is a spare alt. belt in the tool kit. Any thoughts on this or do I just buy a new belt from the Ferrari dealer?

    8. The owners manual shows how to loosen the alternator to put the belt on. The lower alt. bolt seems hard to get to without taking the aluminum coolant pipe off whichI think means draining the coolant. Any thoughts on this?

Finally someone always comes through on this forum which I appreciate. Thanks guys.

Do you mean this (circled yellow) rubber piece? I think it's there to protect the fuel tank during r/r of the thousand ton AC compressor. The water pipe doesn't have to be moved to undo the two alternator bolts. You just have to work it with different combinations of sockets and extensions, and wrench. If you have to move the pipe, you can loosen (sp?) the clamps (purple) from the bottom of the car to drain a bit of coolant. THen undo the top of the pipe (at the engine) then you wiggle it out to make more room. Becareful when undo the pipe clamps at the bottom, you might be mistakenly undo the pipe clamp for the gas line between the two tanks! It's obvious, but when I was doing it at 1am and tired, I screwed up. The alternator belt can be bought from below web site.

Thanks. The rubber piece is flat and about 6x10" inches.I mentioned that I found a large piece near the car. I also found a piece torn from it below the alternator. Moreover last summer when I working under the car I found a rectangular piece about 4x8"that was just loose in the undercarriage. Both pieces looked as if they at one time had some glue on them. For the life of me I cannot figure what they were for. I am sure however that one of the sections got in the alternator belt forcing it to come off and then damaged the WP pulley. When i can figure out how to download pictures I will send some of the rubber pieces.

It's probably from one of these two pieces (circled yellow) on the fuel tank.

NGYUAN. You are correct. Those are about the precise size. Can you tell me what they are for?

Ndguyan. Need some more help. I am trying to remove the alternator bolt on the left in you post circled in turqoise. It has attached to it a support bracket for the metal coolant pipe. I can get a wrench on the nut but when I turn it the bolt rotates as well so nothing seems to be loosening. There does not appear to be anything on the bacside of the nut to hold it. What am I doing wrong here? Thanks for our help.

There is a 17mm nut on the back side, you can reach it from under the car.

MSOUZA. I am having the same problem with the nut on the tensioner adjustment for the alternator. At least I can see the nut on the other side. As for the alternator bolt referred to in my last post I cannot even see the nut on the other side. I am trying to do this with the car on a jack stand so I can get under the car but do not have a lot of room. Do you know if this can be done without the car on a lift?

    Thanks

Yes, it can be done without the lift, just lay under the car, and place your hand in there and feel for the bolt head. It is a 17mm head. I just had mine out last week, as I was replacing the A/C hoses. The same apply for the other bolt, on the tensioner arm.

RussF - Since you are working on the belts, take a look at water pump idler pulley, make sure it runs free.

Msouza. Perhaps you could PM me with your phone number so that I could give you a call to discuss this matter. I can see the backnuts but getting a wrench on them is another matter entirely.

    Hi Russ,

It was great talking with you over the phone. Were you able to reach the back of the pivot bold from under the car?

Hi Milton. I bought a long handled ratchet wrench and I am going to start trying to get at the tensioner bolt first. Will keep you posted. Again thanks for your help.

Milton. Success with the tensioner bolt. The wrench that I bought is by Husky and has a head that pivots and a handle that extends to probably 14-15 inches. Gave me enough reach to get at the backside bolt. I can hold onto both wrenches and turn the nut so that it is now loose. This wrench made it quite easy. Now I go to work on the pivot bolt. Will keep you posted.
