Hi All, I do not have any starter cranking and the alternator light does not illuminate. What I've checked/verified so far: 1) The bulb illuminates with the key switch in the run position and a jumper attached to one side of the bulb socket and ground, but still no starter action in the start position. The fuel pump energizes. 2) Removed alternator and the light control circuit is functioning properly. 3) Continuity between bulb socket terminal and alternator terminal measures open. Checked all wiring connectors and all seem OK. The wiring schematic shows a diode in line with the bulb; where is this located? 4) Starter cranks the engine when jumped at the terminals. 5) Replaced key switch electrical terminal portion with BMW unit Anything else that would cause this condition? Thanks
Sounds like your typical 328 starter solenoid issue....Do you have power when the key is in the "Start" position at the solenoid wire? If yes, the starter is the culprit. We've done a couple of rebuilds/replacements when available over the last few years.
There is no power at the solenoid terminal with the key in the start position. Jumping between the battery and solenoid terminals provides good engine cranking.
Electrically, there really isn't any relationship between these two systems, but they do share a couple of connectors -- have you inspected/reseated, both the 135 connector (behind the passenger footrest) and the 169 connector (that I would guess is in the engine compartment)? Or alternatively, since you report "There is no power at the solenoid terminal with the key in the start position", have you made the same measurement on the B (white) start command wire at the 135 and 169 connectors?
Hi Jack Check the connectors between the engine wire harness and the car wire loom close to the left rear shock absorber. If no fault is detected, check the connectors located under the pax footrest . I had a intermittent starter motor problem caused by a loose pin in a connecteur under the footrest
Connector 169 was the problem and although I checked it previously, removing the receptacle from the frame and thorougly cleaning the receptacle and plug with contact cleaner solved both issues.
