I'm looking at purchasing a 308 or 328 in the near future, and in my research I have seen several photos of 328s with a cover on the spare wheel (or no spare wheel? Didn't get to see what's under it) and some audio equipment in that cover - namely a Passive Crossover Network, and some other bits - however I cannot find any reference to what this is?

Was it a "premium audio" option on the 328? Can anyone tell me what it actually entails (and is it worth it)?

No premium audio option . Barely an audio option at all!

It will be a home made thing sitting in the wheel with an Amp mounted on it. I have one in mine - it drives a sub-woofer hidden in the footwell.

Its of questionable value & am considering returning it to stock (which is easy enough to do)

I have the additional speaker hidden under the carpet in the passenger footwell (working) but no amp in the spare area or PCN.
...The "premium audio" starts at 6000 RPM...

Perhaps it is a one off custom thing. I was sure I saw it on several cars, but must have just been the same car several times.

Not sure why I'm interested to be honest - I have a pretty good sound system in my DD - the 308/328 when/if I get one will be a fun vehicle only, and I'd rather listen to that V8...

I've been trying to figure out a way to unobtrusively (and non-destructively) mount some low-profile rear speakers. So far, no luck. There's nothing wrong with wanting a better sounding stereo in a 3x8... "the engine is music enough" ... c'mon, turning the stereo on is optional.

I think all that Apple iCrap + NAV + bluetooth that Porsche shoves down your throat is silly. But guys, admit it. If the 3x8 had a GREAT stereo, I don't think anyone would ever be saying "You know, I really wish it was more under-powered and had 2 crappy door speakers." ;)

I don't have a Porsche, but I have a BMW M3 with Harmon Kardon sound - it's really good in my non-audiophile view. And you're right, cranking the music up is great at the right time... but that's not my reason for getting a Ferrari 3x8. Having said that, if the above equipment was OEM, I probably would lean towards it - as you say, the stereo is optional but great to have.

Enzo's V8 sounds sweeter than any car I've ever owned... but sometimes I also want to hear my 80's playlist blasting through the open roof. And not sound like it did in my Dad's Camaro. In 1984. On an 8-track cassette adapter. ;)

Yes - couldn't think of anything better than driving a Ferrari blaring Rick Astley's "Never Going To Give you Up" in rush hour traffic. Rick-roll the entire city...

The stereo in my 328 hasn't been turned on in years. Why bother?

Ed Zachery. I guess my only thought was "if it comes with a premium audio option I'd prefer a factory unit". But as others have said, turning it on is optional.

I like a good stereo. Nice on a long drive when you are trying to go someplace (Like when I go back and forth to Atlanta).

I also like it to look like it belongs in the car so I have a very nice period correct Blaupunkt CR-3001 cassette deck just like the ones I saw as a kid. Seemed like they all had this very receiver back in the early 80's . The Ferrari dealers down in these parts must have loved them.

But it is connected to component speakers by Polk with 125 RMS capability, Anthony Gallos in the rear just like the Blaupunkt Globe speakers dealers used to sit up in there, an alpine CD changer (the CD remote display sits perfectly in that little recess that the clock and oil temp gauges used to be in the pre 80 cars. Don't even see it unless you are looking for it) and 450 watt 4 channel amp. The changer and amp are on top of my spare.

Nothing looks out of place and sounds fantastic.

I have an Infinity Reference REF-6500CFX component speaker system in my 308 with the tweeters in the window crank holes, a small power amp in the footwell and a modern-ish Bluetooth head unit in the dash.

I removed a subwoofer from the passenger footwell because it needed its own amp and I never could get it to integrate nicely into the sound stage. The car came with the subwoofer as well as amps and a CD changer mounted in the trunk, all of which I have removed to return the trunk to stock.

Speakerwise, I think I have pretty much all you can get into the car without needing to do major cutting and fab work (although there are certainly better quality speakers than mine). Good amps are very important, but only if the car has optimally positioned speakers which can let the amps sparkle. The 3x8 just can't have major speakers without major interior modification.

I suppose it always comes down to what one personally considers to be "hifi" sound. Many people would have kept in my subwoofer.

Personally, I am finding I use the system almost solely for verbal directions from Google Maps.

    Brian,

    Questions on your tweeters...

    - How did you achieve enough door depth at the window-crank position, to mount the speaker?
    - Can you post a pic?

My tweeters are in the same place at the window crank position (a previous owner did this and I just kept it this way). Tweeters come with two mounting options and mine are just mounted to the surface of the door so the space behind (or lack of) doesn't matter.

Coolness. It will be awhile before/if I start improving the stereo aspects; more important things to address first. But I like knowing the success others have had. :)

I am currently away but can (try to) do so in a couple of days.
Ditto. An advantage to surface mounting the tweeters is that they can be pointed toward the ears rather than the knees.

For what it’s worth, I bought my ‘84 308QV with a bunch of aftermarket audio stuff installed throughout the car. It had an amp in the rear storage compartment, speakers on the rear deck and a subwoofer under the seat (among other things). I removed it all.

The audio stuff was outdated, although I’m sure the previous owner spent a good deal of time and money installing the stuff. In my opinion, the car is timeless and should be around for a long time, certainly long enough to make any aftermarket audio gear seem out of date. In fact, I bought the car at a favorable because of all the aftermarket stuff....which makes me wonder about adding “new” audio stuff to my car. I really enjoy a good sound system, but a decent single-DIN unit and two good speakers are good enough for me in the tiny cabin of my 308. Just my opinion, but the keeping the cabin mostly original and having acceptable audio is the best of both worlds for me.
