I just got 4 new center caps for my '86 328 and searched for some threads on how tin install them, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I looks to me that you could possibly use a hook tool to get the old the old ones out and then just pop the new ones in. Then again I think I read somplace there you have to take the wheel off.

Does anyone have any advise on this?

    Thanks,

    Chris

Take the wheel off and pop it out from the back. More specifics are in the archives.

Chris, Michael gave good advice above. Unless you're willing to destroy the old caps (i.e. drill center and pull out) don't try to pry around the edges. Remove wheels, tap from rear, & reinstall wheel. Lug bolts torque to 72 ft-lbs.

As mentioned, the safest, least damaging way is to remove the wheel. My old ones were so bad, that I did not mind ruining them. I took a corkscrew and srewed it in, then pulled them out. Tap the new ones in with a rubber mallet on a towel. The new ones (clear plastic part) are just as fragile as the old.

I refinished my wheels last May and replaced the valve stems and center caps at that time. By far the easiest way to remove the old ones is from behind. When installing the new ones, (VERY tight fit) I used a little grease around the edge and popped them in by hand.

It helps to do this on a hot (90 ish) day when the plastic in the old & new ones is a bit more flexable.

Don't try to do it in 65 F or below weather, the plastic is likely to shatter...
