The central locking has failed on my 328 (uk spec 1986 GTS).

I can lock either door with the key manually - however no central locking. Also when I close the doors the interior don't go out - and neither do the little red warning pool lights that sit in the trailing door edge.

The fuse (No 3) is intact - but I have removed it otherwise the battery drains.

I have removed both door actuators as the first step and tested both - they look like the originals.

the grey/brown on eis the master from the drivers door - it doesn't work.
the black one is from the passenger side (slave?) and this works on the bench.

More bizzarely I found that someone has bodged the drivers side previously, because although the original actuator was still in place and wired into the car - someone had installed and bypassed it with a generic actuator as shown in the photos attached.

The aftermarket actuator has its own two - wire supply which is independent of the original actuator

The aftermarket actuator functioned on the bench.

I assume that the idea was that original defunct drivers side actuator was left in place to ensure connectivity, but its movement function was no provided by an aftermarket module.

It all worked as a system until recently, but now not.

So I am wondering if it is the control box for the central locking that is now 'gone'?
And is the interior lights dependent on the central locking working or do I have an unrelated problem associated with the delay relay?

I found this image of a door lock actuator for a 1990 Golf GTI, looks the same. You might start by putting it all back to stock, also get a wiring diagram and trace the circuits too.

Thanks for that - that looks identical. I have also obtained actautors from a Saab 9000/900 of the same year, and they look very similar (and operate in a similar fashion) - but none of the ones I can find are '5 wire', so I'll look for Golf GTI (or presumably any golf?) and see if that works.

    Much appreciated

is there a part number on the Golf GTI actuator - my own searches are not pulling up an actuator that looks like the one in the photo - on any sites or search engines

I've now identified this actuator - should anyone need one again. It is from a Peugeot 205 - Gti Phase 1.5 1990. I believe in reality it is common across any of the 205 range of that era. However it must be a grey bodied one (2 socket) for the drivers side (master) and a black bodied one (1 socket) (slave) in the passenger door. They are quite rare as the 205 is now a classic, but they can be found on ebay at a more reasonable cost than from the usual Ferrari spares suppliers.
