I was a little dumbfounded when a friend and 328 owner asked me how to hook up their garmin. I told them to plug it into the cigarette lighter and they said they had an ashtray but no lighter in the car. Can this be. Are the Italians trying to discourage smoking in their cars.

I'd think the only way a 328 wouldn't have a lighter socket (if not the lighter) would be if someone removed it to install an aftermarket gizmo in that spot in the console.

The other option would be the "trouble lamp" socket under the dash on the driver's side. The US models didn't come with the lamp, but they still have the socket. Someone, a while back, posted a link to a mating connector (from a motorcycle supply, if memory serves). You could do a search on trouble lamp, if the friend wanted to pursue that option.

Keep in mind that the lighter socket is always on -- the garmin would drain down the battery if you forgot to turn it off. There are lighter plugs (e.g. from radio shack) with a switch built in.

No, it's best to get lost in a 328...a lot more fun than knowing where you will end your trip ;)

The early 308s had a fixed lighter element that was not a standard 12V outlet, but I think by 328s it was a standard socket.

Thanks for your reply. I assume it's location is not too conspicuous; could you tell me where the lighter is located. They said it wasn't in the ashtray. Owner has had the 328 for 3-4 yrs. Tks.

Its on the top right of the center console. Directly under the ashtray. Maybe they think its an A/C knob or switch.

I have a US 1989 328 GTS, and it has the trouble light, complete with little cavallino embossed in the plastic, all stored in a cheesy little plastic storage pouch.

The parts catalog I have lists the "aid lamp" as "not for USA - SA - J". But it's the '88 edition of the catalog.

Ricambi only has the 88 and 85 versions of the 328 parts catalog online, but the annotation isn't there on the 85 catalog. So it looks like some years had it, but '88 didn't.

+1, my 1987 (usa) 328GTS came with one too. Cheesy black vinyl pouch and all. :)

In fact, I still have one from a 308 that is identical, sitting in a desk drawer somewhere....

I've been to Italy several times and, from what I could tell, they seem to love smoking more than any group of people I've ever seen. I don't think they know it's bad for you yet! LOL ;)

Don't have a picture handy, but on my 328 it's located on the bottom of the dash panel, a couple of inches to the left of the steering wheel. Mine is an "88 and it has the "trouble light."

My 328 is at the dealer, at the moment, having the wiring restored to factory (aftermarket junk out) and the aircon sorted (again), so I can't post a picture right now. But its just above (and slightly inboard of) your left knee (in a LHD car). It looks more like an aluminum dimple than a socket.

Hmm. I wonder if some dealers in '88 thought the lamps went missing in transit and added them from parts stock. ;) The '88 parts catalog (both the copy I have and the online one at Ricambi) list the "aid lamp" as not for USA, SA, or Japan.

My '88 has everything else (tools, books, window sticker) -- but no aid lamp. But I didn't buy it new, so I can't be certain it didn't have one.

I wonder how they'd count that in concours: having a trouble lamp the catalog says didn't come with the car. ;)
