    Guys,

My car is in for a major after being off the road about 5yrs, started weekly and garaged in San Diego drove around and fueled up maybe twice.

My question is, what causes this damage to the fuel system? My CIS was smartly sent out for rebuild and my mechanic wants to pull the tanks for fear of clogging it up again (he made the effort and attempted cleaning several times also)..

I trust this guy, that's not an issue. It's nothing unexpected, I'm just shocked at the fuel damage.

Here's a few pics, I assume a pickup or sending unit from the tank. I don't know.

    Appreciate the feedback

I don't have an answer but would love to know how your mech removed it from the tank.
When I replaced my fuel filter,I tried with almighty force to undo it from the tank, but stopped from fear of shearing it off.

My fuel sending rotted away after being stored for over 10 years and I had the same issue. I had to remove my tanks and flush them out to get it all out. I would remove the sender and check its condition.

Fuel goes off - it eventually tries to turn itself back into crude (crud).

Better to drain the system completely and flush with new fuel every few months.

Or sell the car and buy another one when you're ready to drive it.

Geez if I would of know this would happen I'd store the car with a gallon of fuel onboard...

I'm just shocked at the condition. Not to mention I have 400 gallons in my boat fuel tank from last season I'm worried about now. Yes I add Stabill but dam I never thought it would be this bad....

    Lesson learned...
